Fab Flea Market Finds (and Sewing Machines Galore)

What fun I had at the flea market today with my friend Johanna!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day -- all the flowering trees in full bloom.

I love a big table covered with junk (no jokes about my apartment, please).  You never know what you'll find.

That baby looks VERY familiar.

Naturally, it was all I could do not to check out the vintage eyeglass frames, but I held strong.   (Johanna's actually sporting a pair of Warby Parkers.)

We saw many sewing machines -- they show up more frequently in the warmer months for some reason.

This toy Brother actually takes batteries, though it also has a hand crank.

This Featherweight was $200 (accessories included) -- a very fair price but not the bargain of the century.

Here's a Singer 328, an early zigzagger that takes embroidery cams.

There were some more modern machines too.  Not tempted at all.  (Would you be?)

Among the other "collectibles" to be had: a vintage Motorola portable record player.

Rusty irons.

A groovy rotating nun music box that plays Schubert's Ave Maria.

A pair of fully-rooted mannequin heads.

A vintage lunch box overflowing with Sixties-era Barbie clothes.

And so much more!

Best of all, readers, is that I bought....nothing!  (Correction: I picked up two CDs for $2 each: Baby Jane Dexter and Karen Akers -- almost nothing.)

I hope your weekend has been a pleasant one.  We have a big week ahead, so get plenty of rest if you can.

Happy Sunday, everybody!

  4. The Gillette Supermax blow-dryer in front of the Singer 328 - how I wish it were mine! If I'd been there with you, I'd have grabbed it. Bright and clean, with all its attachments. . . just like the one my family once owned for fifteen years of daily use. Like sewing machines, they don't make them like that anymore.

  5. I owned that same Supermax. Would love to have one again, although as I was looking at those pictures, I was thinking, "Boy am I glad I don't live near a weekly flea market." I'd really be in over my head...literally.

  6. I discovered the flea markets of Chelsea through your blog and as a result scored some beautiful thread buttons –see the story on my blog (http://ccsews.blogspot.com.au/). Thankyou!

  7. I can't believe you came home without that statue of David (or whoever if I'm wrong!).

  8. I can see you had a great time!
By the way, those "rusty irons" make great weights for tracing patterns or holding (proper paper) self-drafted pattern pieces in place. I bought three of those a few months ago and use them all the time.

  9. That is so cool. I wish we had big flea markets like that where I live.
A visibly aged fairy godmother thing, a black Santa Clause, and a punk oompa loompa. Awesome!

  10. Eeek, the baby Brother is so cute! But why are flea markets always filled with creepy old dolls? Yikes!

  12. Oh, but Peter, did you see that chrome handwheel on the Featherweight? She was one of the pre-war ones. What if she had turned out to be a 1933 first run machine? Next time you see something like that at a flea market, you should post it to your blog immediately. I'd be willing to pay you a finder's fee! :-)

  13. I will be taking a trip to New York next month to visit a friend. He no doubt, will be dragging me out to flea markets and probably shopping (which I hate). Although I am not really into junkie type stuff, this flea market does look interesting for many reasons.

  15. I have that same machine you were not tempted by. It's not one of my favorites.

Every few months I re-discover your blog by accident and fall down the rabbit hole for a few days.
