Peter models the blue linen blazer!

Readers, today is a very special day, and not just because it's National Caviar Day (look it up).  Today I present my linen blazer photo shoot, completed early this morning just before the thermometer hit ninety.

Yesterday we were discussing buttons and you made many excellent suggestions.  I made a beeline for Daytona Trim on 39th Street soon after, not because of their huge button selection, but precisely because their selection is not huge.  I didn't have hours to spend and I really didn't want to agonize over buttons.  Here's what I purchased.

Plastic or horn?  You decide.  I think they suit the blazer extremely well.

My sleeve lining attached and the buttonholes made, I stitched on my buttons, did some (very minimal) pressing, and was ready to go!

Are there some areas that could use some extra fiddling?  Perhaps, but I'm proud to say I made a blazer that fits and is totally wearable as-is.  In fact, I may wear it to dinner tonight with an old friend.  Maybe the toile jeans too!

I am very happy to be finished and very ready to switch gears.  Onward ho, as we always say at MPB.

You can see more linen blazer pics here.  (Which outfit do you like better, the shorts or the toile jeans?)

Have a great day, everybody!

  1. totally love your blazer...especially with the jeans; would like to see a tad extra length on your jeans...but that's just my personal preference with jeans.

    1. I like the pant length. It's not something for every pair of pants, but I like it on these. Reminds me of MJ!

  2. Yeah, the jeans are a little too short... so it's the shorts that do it for me, Peter!

  3. Peter, the blazer looks wonderful. Very good job!

But I'm curious...why were you out on the street in your tighty-orangies?

  4. Peter, I love it! Sadly, I had to give up on a linen jacket in progress because I lost one of the sleeve pieces, and my source has sold out of the fabric. I considered color blocking :) because one contrasting sleeve would look really sharp, right? ha. But, the more important reason it became a wadder was because the rear end of it stretched during UFO status. I guess I should have underlined more? I dunno. I need to learn more about sewing with linen and try again.
Your jacket really looks great and I love the Beauty Shot in the beginning of the post.

  5. FANTASTIC JOB!! The blazer is terrific. You must be proud to have achieved such a quality result. And I like it with the toile jeans!

  10. OMG the blazer is exactly the perfect companion that your toile jeans needed. Great outfits - I love them both. The shorts and blazer reminds me of what is often seen at church here in Florida in the warmer months, even on Easter, or out to dinner in the summer. Sort of a 'dressy casual' look. Fantastic job on all pieces.

  11. West 24th? Shouldn't you be on 5th Ave in this stunning outfit! The blazer is fab!

  12. It looks fabulous! Great fit and the linen turned out perfect - not too "tame," not too slouchy/wrinkly (as linen tends to do). Bravo! I really like the toile jeans... I was a little neutral on them before, but they pair very well with the jacket.

And I love that you're walking around in your undies on the street. Glad I'm not the only one who does that on occasion lol.

    1. Ok.. I had to comment on his underwear flashing but now I have to comment on yours. Was it one of those moments you realized it wasn't a dream?

  13. Beautiful job on the blazer, you took a piece of something that wants to ravel away and wrinkle, and made it into something elegant. The jeans hands down, with the shorts it looks like you intend to change into something just right soon. An Italian man would never wear shorts with a blazer, think of that.

  14. Most definately the jeans! I great combo together! Jacket looks wonderful. Job...WELL DONE! Congrats!

    Love the jacket. Looks fabulous.

  23. Peter, your blazer looks fantastic! And I think it goes really well with the toile jeans. Way to go!

  24. WOW! Great blazer, and the buttons are SO right. Shorts or jeans, your linen jacket plays well with everyone.

Orange underwear (I luv my pair)!

Congratulations on anther sewing success story!

  25. Great blazer. I choose the toile jeans. It's a great casual combination, but still dressy.

  26. You look great! (Nice underwear). Especially digging the toile/blazer combo. Bravo Peter!

  27. Bravo! Beautiful jacket. It fits and looks great. Minimal pressing is the way to go because the minute you put it on it wrinkles. The charm of linen. The jacket looks good with both but I am leaning toward the toile jeans. I like the button choice as well.

  28. I like the underwear pic the best, obviously.
you did a great job on the jacket. The button choice is great. I also like going to shops with good but smaller selections as it makes the decision so much easier. I was thinking that Beckenstein has a nice small selection of vintage buttons, but I bet they are pricey.

  29. The blazer is superb, and looks great with both shorts and jeans. I particularly love the toile jeans (because I particularly love toile de jouy), but I agree with a previous commenter, I think the jeans are a bit short...

Nice job! A hearty Attaboy to ya.

  32. Suffice it to say, if I had no idea that you sewed, I would NEVER ask if you made it yourself. Love it with the toile jeans and, nope, I like the length for summery jeans. I'd go for less formal shoes, though, with the outfit -- deck shoes, white converse, even sandals to emphasize that "Weekday at Leisure" look.

  33. This looks FAB! It's completely stunning! I love it with the toile jeans!

  34. I think you look fab and I LOL'ed over your tighties orangies on the street. I like the jeans a lot and I don't think they are too short the way you wear them with the sock-less shoe. That kinda makes it look just right to me.

Could you look in your junk email and see if there's an email from me in there? I sent you an email to your gmail address to ask a question about the shops. Thanks!

  39. Hmmm I'm going to have to visit NYC more often if men are dressing on the street now :) The blazer looks great. I know how much work jackets are - great job!

  40. Amazing! You and your outfit look sensational. Who would have thought those jeans could look so stylish. I think you may have started a trend!

  41. I really love this blazer, and the button choice was right on. I ESPECIALLY love that you dressed right on the street---who was the chuckle head photographer that just couldn't resist snapping off a few during changes? Out here on the plains we will, on occasion, run to the mailbox in our undies. But we live on a dirt road and our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away. Worthy effort on the blazer Peter, and very inspirational.

  42. I love the button choice and I love the jacket with both the jeans and the shorts. The pop of pink in the pocket just gives the outfit that bit of whimsy that speaks of your personality. With the jeans it's a great evening out, with the shorts it's a great luncheon outfit. I'm really impressed!

  43. The toile pants are amazing. I know you posted about them when you made them, but I just have to say they look amazing. Linen is such a smart fabric choice in this crazy heat. Your blazer looks really great too.

  44. The blazer looks wonderful. My first thought was that blazers just don't go with shorts, but when I saw your pics today, I quite liked the short look - kind of smart school boy. If it is still 90 degrees at night in NY wearing the shorts to dinner would make sense. I'll focus on that while I huddle in my woollens. Our weather bureau says Melbourne is just having an ordinary cold winter, but since we are recently out of a a decade long drought that meant mild winters, it feels like a REALLY cold winter here!

  45. Either way you look fabulous!

The first photo made me laugh and my teen son cringe.

  46. That outfit looks great! Wear the jeans too tonight! I like the undies too!

  47. Looking ever-so-dapper, Peter!

  48. The blazer and the jeans look so sharp together. Nice look and great job!

  49. I have to go with the shorts although the jeans are quite nice. I really like the picture with the grafitti. Sets off the jacket quite nicely. Good job, I am quite jealous.

  50. The blazer is fantastic and you look adorable! It's hard to decide which look I like best but, because it'll be over a 100 tomorrow, the shorts it is. You look ready for a cool cocktail before hitting the shops down in the desert.

  51. Gee, I didn't know they still made Y-fronts in ORANGE! So seventies! ;-)

Peter that blazer is FANTASTIC.It looks GREAT on you, and the toile pants are perfect (except for the length, but then I'm picky that way.)

Oh, and I found the instruction on how to make the shoulder "shields"; it's in Kenneth King's book of "Designer Techniques" (It has TWO different titles, and I have a copy of BOTH because I didn't know that!>:-( ) Great book though; I recommend it highly! Clear explanations, diagrams, and he's FUNNY, too!

  52. Cute undies! But this post is about that fantastic jacket right?! It looks like you've done an awesome job Peter, and you deserve a bowl of caviar to celebrate!

  53. I love the toile jeans with the blazer, I knew it would look good, but seeing it here, oh my, that is pure style in anyones book.
You have taken a classic style combination and with the addition of the toile fabric raised the game.
    Very nice work indeed.

I really like the jacket..well done...you are true inspiration to our community(sewing).
PS. Whats with undies? did you make them as well? hehe

  57. If you had a dry cleaner you trusted, they could do a good press job on the collar. That's a tip I remember from long ago. I love the rumpled look with linen myself, although I'm not saying the blazer looks rumpled at all. It is perfect with both the shorts and toile pants. Great buttons.

  58. I see London, I see France,
    I see... orange!?!?!?!

Aww, I knew that deep down you secretly loved my favorite color. Great blazer, Peter!
