Panel Print Shirt Collar + I'M DONE!

The big job today was making a collar for my shirt.

I wasn't sure how to place the pattern.

I cut and, with pins, tested four different versions (including the solid version up top):

I ended up choosing the last one: it's dotted consistently throughout (much like the front button placket); it doesn't darken or lighten horizontally.  It was actually cut on the grain, while the rest of the shirt was cut on the crossgrain.

Remember, my original fabric -- I'd bought two complete panels -- looked like this:

I decided to make my inside collar stand dark to add contrast.

I used real mother of pearl buttons, whose color varies from oyster to dark gray.  These work perfectly with the fabric.

And now -- drum roll, please -- the completed shirt!  (click on pics to enlarge)

I'll take some photos at tonight's party at Elliot Berman Textiles so you can see me wearing the shirt.  I still have a few hours to go but I need them: I'm pooped.  My cold has passed, however, so even though I'm weary, I no longer feel sick.

Miracle sewing cure?  It's possible.

Have a great day, everybody!

I call this shirt, "big city mud splash."

  1. Peter, I didn't think it would work with this panel print; I couldn't envisage it half light/half dark. But I'm blown away by the result! Beautiful work, as always! I look forward to seeing it photographed on you.

  7. The result is excellent -- very expensive-looking! You made really good decisions re. pattern placement and I especially like the collar stand idea. Mind if I call this the 'Confetti' shirt? Glad you're feeling better, too.

  25. Love it a lot! I would not have thought of doing this with a border print. It really made what would have been a pretty run-of-the-mill design into an eye-catching and unusual shirt.

  26. Such a pretty shirt to go out somewhere fun! Have you ever thought about making detachable collars? The reason I'm suggesting this is because I liked all the collar options you showed and I thought It'd be a good idea to have separate detachable collars for different looks. Great job!

Peter, you have a genuine "eye" for how things go together. Your sewing skills are top notch, but your "eye" adds dimensions to your work. Congrats. Have you considered moving into "coulture" garments for trhe carriage trade?

  39. Peter, the idea to use the panel fabric in a horizontal way is as simple as it is sheer genius... The end result is simply fantastic!! I totally love this shirt, and I wouldn't be surprised if there'd be some 'inspired by' creations out in the big world soon (I know I am tempted...)

  40. This has to be my favorite shirt you've made ever. I'm insane for the fabric. Every choice you made was perfect.

My son is just the size to start wearing some of the smallest men's clothes. would you mind suggesting what pattern you think would be good for me to start with. I'd love to make him a very standard shirt that would fit a tall thin boy well.

    1. Becky, I'm not that familiar with in-print mens patterns. I know there are a few from the big 4 that many people have made -- maybe check Pattern Review? Sorry not to be able to help more!

    2. There is not much out there currently in the big 4 or Burda that appeals to me. I guess that I was meaning of the ones that you've made yourself. I don't mind digging through ebay for a vintage. I was wondering which one of your shirt patterns do you think would fit a slim built male best.

    3. How about something like this Kwik Sew (it's multi-sized)? It's slim cut and has a separate collar stand.
