Friends, despite extensive negotiation between his people and my people, I am sad to report that I will not be able to give couture fashion designer Kenneth D. King away to any of my readers. There's only one of him, alas, and he's a busy man.
However, thanks to the generosity of Mr. King, I am able to give away a sealed copy of his latest DVD,
Smart Sewing with Fake Fur to one lucky
MPB reader!
I first met Kenneth King in 2009 at the American Sewing Expo, back when I had just started to sew, and we've been in touch ever since. Both devotees of thrift stores and flea markets, we often run into each other on our respective weekend shopping jaunts. (BTW, if you don't already follow Kenneth on
Instagram, where he catalogs his fabulous finds, what are you waiting for?)
But there's more!
If you're in NYC this coming
Wednesday, November 18th at 6 pm, you can meet Kenneth King in person! He'll be presenting
Smart Sewing with Fake Fur at the Fashion Institute of Technology Barnes & Noble Bookstore, located in the David Dubinsky Student Center on 27th St. between 7th & 8th Avenues. He'll also be signing copies of his book,
Cool Couture, and his novel,
All Grown Up Now.
If you'd like to participate in the
Smart Sewing with Fake Fur DVD giveaway, just leave a comment below between now and Tuesday, November 17th at 12pm EST. Everyone is eligible, and I'll be announcing the winner on Wednesday, November 18th, the same day as Kenneth's launch party.
Parenthetically, I followed Kenneth King's excellent fake fur instructions (in a printed format) when I made my cousin Cathy a coat in 2011. The results were marvelous!
All right, all you Kenneth King and faux fur fans, ready to toss your hats in the ring?
Remember, you have until midnight, EST, Tuesday, November 17th and I'll be announcing the winner on Wednesday, November 18th.
Have a great day, everybody!
I admit it--I really admire Kenneth King and I'd love to have his DVD. Please throw a hat in the ring for me.
ReplyDeleteLove Kenneth King!
ReplyDeleteThe more times I comment, the more chances I have to win? Comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, comment, . . . comment,
ReplyDeleteGreat news, will try to show up and sign his book :)
ReplyDeleteI've purchased some good stuff, have the dust buster and the protective mask to sew a great faux fur for me and unselfishly will use the remnant to line the hood of the peacoat I'm sewing DH. All I require is some Kenneth King in any form!
ReplyDeleteI do love his COOL COUTURE book, so no reason I wouldn't appreciate his dvd!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog and love Kenneth King. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteHat in the ring!
ReplyDeleteHow timely! I'm looking for some faux fur for a coat project and haven't worked with it in over 30 years. It was a Halloween costume and definitely not couture sewing!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, a wardrobe cannot be considered complete without at least one fake fur garment.
ReplyDeleteThrowing my hat in the ring-hope you post to NZ or deliver??
ReplyDeleteWell, since you are unable to give away Kenneth, I would accept his DVD.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want ALL of Kenneth - a couple of hours over coffee would be fine, really. But if a DVD has to suffice, I'll deal. And thanks!
ReplyDeleteAnother Kenneth King fan here! That DVD sounds so fun - I don't have anything like it
ReplyDeleteWell, I will be in NYC this coming week. Should check out the book event of Kenneth King's! Thanks for the tip! Excited to visit NYC. It has been a long time since I was there last. Fabric shopping....buttons....
ReplyDeleteCathy looks so beautiful and chic in her coat. I loved this when you made it. Working with fake fur is so messy but well worth the effort. Count me in! Xx
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness it's been so long since we've seen Cathy. Little Simplicity must be at kindergarten by now! And Kenneth King is a god among men. Fur does me head in and I would love to be in the draw.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, please! Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be able to sew with faux fur!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
Love Cathy's coat!!!
I love Kenneth King!
ReplyDeleteHow cool it would be to win the Smart Sewing with Fake Fur DVD! I hope to win. Thanks, Peter!
ReplyDeleteI'd be thrilled to win anything by Kenneth King!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win--count me in!
ReplyDeleteI think KDK's fiance would not appreciate him being given away! I love Kenneth and his stories are the BEST!
ReplyDeleteSign me up! I've read Cool Couture many times. Now on to fur.
ReplyDeleteenjoy your blog and humor. Love the outfits you create. Thank you for sharing your talent with us your readers. I'm in for the chance to win the DVD...
ReplyDeletei hope he's seen your silver jeans, and yes, i'd LOVE a copy of his dvd. his books are just a pleasure.
ReplyDeleteYes, count me in, please. I have the book Cool Couture but regrettably won't be able to ask him to sign it.
ReplyDeleteI love fake fur and would love the King DVD!
ReplyDeleteA Kenneth King DVD? Fur real? Oh, wait...
ReplyDeleteSend it to me, please.
ReplyDeleteThat would be lovely to own. Count me in.
ReplyDeleteLove any and all things KK! Wish I could be in NYC for the reading...
ReplyDeleteThanks for trying (he blots the corners of his eyes), Peter.
ReplyDelete(soft sobbing in the distance)
I would love to be included in the drawing!
ReplyDeleteLove K.K. and it would be nice to win!
ReplyDeleteFunny timing. I just bought an adorable fun fur jacket at the thrift store yesterday!
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I have his "Cool Couture" and "Designer Techniques" books and most of his Threads articles. He is not only willing to share his expertise, but does so with "I know you can do this, too" attitude.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love Kenneth King! Would love to win his book!
ReplyDeleteKenneth is King! I had the pleasure of meeting him in SF over twenty five years ago and have been following (almost stalking) him every since. He is not only a very talented designer but also a kind, patient instructor.
ReplyDeleteConsider my hat -- as I toss it in the ring. Anything from Kenneth, will make me sing.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog very much, especially the precise attention to detail in your work. I have been a fan of Mr. King since I bought his book on shirtmaking. Thank you for sharing your design and creative process.
ReplyDeleteYou're thinking of David Coffin--he's the man who wrote the book on that....
DeleteOh my yes, that's the mind fuzziness at work with all my books at home. Well of course, they are both amazing!
DeleteWait, Mr. King himself is replying! You have been a favorite at American Sewing Expo in Novi for many years, really appreciate your dedication to sharing your knowledge and skill.
DeleteI understand, it is wrong to give other people away. although he is getting married, and you could discuss that role for that event. Otherwise, no.
ReplyDeleteI love all Kenneth King. I'm in.
My sister is performing that task as part of her role as Best Woman.
Delete{Actual wailing and moaning in the distance}
DeleteI have been in a couple of classes with Kenneth King, he is a great teacher, and an awesome man. I have been salivating over his fur dvd.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity! I look longingly at fake fur in the fabric store/s - but have no sense of how to even start sewing with it... I'd love to tune into Kenneth King for advice...!
ReplyDeletelove love love him he is so adorbs! And he follows me on Instagram and likes my posts I am too ecstatic at that! I wish I were in NYC to meet him on the 18th! You guys are so lucky to have him! I would love to have this set as I often sew with real fur as well :-)
ReplyDeleteThe information applies for real fur as well as fake--I learned these techniques by taking apart quite a few real fur coats. Thanks for the kind words!
DeleteI have taken a couple of Craftsy classes with Kenneth and I learned so very much!! Thank you! Even if I don't win, I am glad to once again take a chance to say what a great teacher Kenneth is!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win Mr. King's book! This is Kelly in Michigan, who sent you some patterns years ago when the blog was new.
ReplyDeleteWell timed! I just cut into my first piece of fake fur 3 days ago and have been terrified and bewildered about my next steps!
ReplyDeleteI am throwing my hat in to the ring. If I don't win could someone tell me where to buy the digital download? The threads magazine website said there will be one available.
ReplyDeleteThe Surgical Sewist at Work photograph is classic MPB. Send the DVD
ReplyDeleteI'm in!!! Thanks so much Peter and Kenneth!!!
ReplyDeleteLove, Kim
I'm in! I would love to find Kenneth in my mailbox but it's probably more economical to mail a DVD :)
ReplyDeleteOh, please send it to me! I have had enough of Donna Sayers faux mink in my stash for a coat forever. I'm just too intimidated to use it. You could free a huge corner of my closet. At this point, I'm worried if I don't do something my kids will eventually be stuck with it when I sew my last seam. It'll go into the landfill. You would be saving the earth if you pick me!
ReplyDeleteOh yes please! I love faux fur (it comes in so many crazy colors!) but it can be such a struggle to work with. I wish I could make it up to New York, but have an excellent time if you go!
ReplyDeleteOh man I struggle so hard with faux fur. Such a fiddly sort of fabric (to me). Then again maybe I just need Kenneth's guiding hand.
ReplyDeleteJust unearthed a large swatch of some really rather nice faux fur from some friend's dead relative's stash. Can you make a paper doll of Kenneth to include in the mailing, should I win?
ReplyDeleteWah! I didn't follow your blog yet back in 2011, but am I glad for this throwback picture of Cathy's coat! It is fabulous! Hats off! You definitely have me intrigued now, and I'd gladly wager my chances to win a copy of this book. Yay Kenneth King and MPB! (Off to check out his novel now)
ReplyDeleteSabine (sushi at telenet dot be)
I would love to win. Fur would be a challenge.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have the DVD.
ReplyDeleteconsider my hat thrown!
ReplyDeleteCount me in. Would love to win this. I know just what I would make.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win this --- Kenneth King is fabulous, as are you!
ReplyDeleteRJ
Thanks for the chance to win this! Love Kenneth King! I remember him from the Vogue Sewing show way back when!
ReplyDeleteI made a fake fur hat many years ago that came out OK, but I'm sure there are tips and tricks in Mr. King's DVD that would have greatly improved the process and results. If I win, maybe that fake tiger fur that's been in the stash for a few years will survive the next round of stash reduction and make it into a coat. Or is fake tiger fur just too far out of style again?
ReplyDeleteJustGail (who's having google login problems again)
Would love to win and try a fake fur adventure. Adding a Kenneth King title would be great for my sewing resource shelf since I just learn at home from the greats.
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I have had the privilege of taking several classes from him at FIT. He is an excellent teacher, down to earth, personable and has such a generous spirit. He is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI have a piece a fake fur that is absolutely charming, and I'm not certain how to work with it. Many thanks for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteRose in SV
I'm going to attempt to work with fur, I think I'll try a fur clutch first.
ReplyDeleteKenneth is amazing! Going to try to make the event!
