When Bad Hurricanes Happen to Good Halloweens

Friends, bad weather is on the way and I'm not sure what to expect.

Michael and I were out walking the dogs earlier today and most stores and restaurants were closed with their windows taped over.  Right now (approximately 1:30 pm), the winds are getting gusty and it's raining.  I think the worst is scheduled for tonight.

Remember my beautiful new metallic dancing slippers?  Well they're currently somewhere behind the metal grate below.  Mass transit will be shut down at least through tomorrow and who knows whether those shoes will be resoled by Wednesday?

Will our Halloween Costume Ball take place Wednesday evening as scheduled?  Maybe.  I'm almost certain that the event would be rescheduled for another time rather than cancelled outright: I mean, people bought tickets and everything.

Today was intended to be a big sewing day and I still expect to move forward with our costumes.  I mean, what else is there to do but carry on?  Decorations are up all over the neighborhood.

Thank you so much for your many makeup suggestions this last weekend.  I was reminded that I happen to own not one but two Kevyn Aucoin makeup books -- Making Faces and Face Forward -- so perhaps now is the time to take a closer look at them.  A special thank you to MPB reader, professional makeup artist Bill J., who went to the trouble of retouching one of my photos, incorporating a few of his recommendations.  I do wish he'd picked one with the wig on, however.

In closing, friends, if you're in the path of Hurricane Sandy, be safe and don't forget to apply plenty of hairspray.

Stay dry, everybody!

  1. I hope everything goes okay for you two and you stay safe in the big storm.

  2. We'll be thinking of you -- stay safe! My sister lives 1/2 mile from the beach in Belford, NJ, near the ferry. They are under mandatory evacuation orders but they want to "wait and see" -- I really hope everyone comes through this okay.

  3. I live on the Texas gulf coast, and we know the drill for hurricanes. Our area is very different from NYC. I can't help but wonder what it would be like to be in a high rise apartment without electricity and water.

Thank goodness you have a treadle sewing machine! Everyone will be bored but you.

Tip from my last hurricane... If you haven't already, fill your bathtub with water. That way, if you lose water pressure, you can still wash your hands, fill the tank to flush your toilet, etc.

  4. I live near New Orleans and second the idea to fill a bath tub with water (or any/all the buckets you can find).

    Good Luck!

  6. Stay safe. I hope it won't end up being too bad of a storm though here in Mi the reports make it sound like the storm of the century. We've already had high winds and a little rain from that storm and we're supposed to have another day or two before winds calm down but at least we're not to get all the rain that NY is supposed to get. I hope you don't lose power.

  8. Thanks for taking the time to update all of us on things in your area. I am in Seattle and we have our usual rain, but nothing severe. I hope all goes well for you. Sometimes a little power outage is relaxing. Stay home and sew on the treadle if you loose power and read those makeup books by candlelight.

  9. I love bill J's retouch!
(I may try it out myself)
Keep safe and do all those sensible things that others have suggested here, like filling the bath tub etc, better to be prepared.

    1. LOL I suggested using gold metallic on the eyelid...but my computer doesn't do a good gold. ...and that white dot is a rhinestone.
Please only use eyelash glue to glue anything near the eyes.

  11. Lots of us in Oz have fingers crossed for all those in the States getting ready for Sandy. My fingers and toes are tightly knotted for my daughter in Philadelphia and for you, Michael and the dogs. Hope power holds out for her to finish her uni assignment and for you to finish the Halloween cossies.

  14. Stay safe, dry and electric-ated. And I sure hope that party is rescheduled. If not, you'll have to throw your own. As a Floridian, the taped windows crack me up. No pun intended. I guess NYers don't know that tape does absolutely nothing.

  15. Stay safe and dry and out of that nasty wind!

  16. Watching the news in London with some disbelief. I hope that you and Michael are safe looking forward to hearing that you are OK.
