Cathy Models the 1950's Maternity Ensemble!

Friends, the big day has finally arrived!

No, not Cathy's due date (sometime this summer, I believe).  I mean the day of our 1950's maternity ensemble photo shoot!

This wasn't our easiest shoot, primarily because Cathy's ankles now have a tendency to swell and she constantly craves tuna fish with Nutella.  But ever the trooper, Cathy came through, and how!  Radiant, with a twinkle in her eye and skip in her step (at least at the beginning of our shoot), Cathy proved once again that she is the consummate professional.

The opera coat lined and hemmed, fashion accessories at the ready (including a beautiful vintage hat -- a gift from an MPB reader!), we set out on this resplendent April morning.

As always, I hope you enjoy our photo shoot.  I know you'll be sensitive to Cathy -- who does seem more prickly these days -- and avoid the word "hilarious" when describing her delicate condition.  She doesn't see the humor in it.  Especially as she begins to resemble a late-August heirloom tomato.

As always, to see these photos full-size, please click on any image and in Picasa, choose the album name, and then, in the upper left hand corner, "Slideshow."  Or something like that.

Honestly, readers, don't you think pregnancy brings out a special loveliness in our young(ish) model?

Enjoy!

  1. wow! You pulled that all together quickly! Looks great, and I really do hope she kicks the ciggy habit. I'd hate for a stray ash to burn a hole in that gorgeous opera coat!

  2. That outfit is so much more elegant than the knit dresses worn by the other celebrity mothers-to-be. In fact, it is so lovely that it could justify increasing my chocolate and wine intake so I'd have an excuse to sew something like it.

  3. Cathy looks wonderful, I'm really liking her hair style! The outfit is great, and what a trooper she is for walking in those heels!

  4. A fleet week fling?! Cigarettes? This is wonderful, and Cathy is my all time favorite hussy with a heart of gold! So chic and with oodles of je ne sais quoi.

  5. Such poise! Such grace and aplomb! Such a chic ensemble! I love the coat and think it could work in Cathy's wardrobe even after the blessed event.

  6. Looks like Cathy is carrying low! What does that mean again? She certainly never fails to surprise.

  7. As usual, I LOVE your photoshoots, and am trying really hard not to use the word hilarious - nothing to do with Cathy's 'situation' of course, but your photoshoots always make me giggle.

The outfit is FABULOUS!!! After your posts about your pattern I found myself an amazing vintage house-coat pattern and I am hanging out for it to arrive so I can make something divine to wear this winter here in Australia.

Please pass on my love and best wishes for the upcoming event to Cathy.

  8. Scandalous!
    But Cathy sure is glamorous!

  9. Cathy is certainly giving January Jones a run for her money in the "scandalously single parent with iconic vintage style" department. The pink overcoat is a winner - looks perfect for New York spring weather.

  10. oh, my favorite photo shoot ever! I'm so glad she's taken up knitting and is moderating her asbestos intake--both very wise.

  11. Cathy is glowing and looking so chic! I love the color pink you’ve chosen, so flattering. Expecting moms seem to be more beautiful. Saying is if you’re carrying low and out, it’s a boy, higher and wide, a girl. Have any summerwear in the works?

  12. This outfit is so chic! Cathy looks radiant. I love the tab detail on the back of the blouse, and the coat is perfect.

  13. Wow! What a lovely chic outfit she is wearing? This is such an elegant outfit for an expectant mother.

Do we know who the father is? She didn't bring a little souvenir back from an overseas holdiday. Did she? Or maybe latin?

  14. I LOVE the opera coat ... it is absolutely fabulous. Watching you sew it, I realised that if you are sewing things yourself, you are not restricted by the fabrics garments are normally made of. I can use a light(ish) cotton and make myself a coat that I can wear even in the tropics (in the cooler months) :-) Okay, not the me right now, but the me in a years time when I have more sewing skills.

  15. Those were THE best!! Cathy looks amazing and dare I say glowing ;)

Will vintage baby clothing be next?

  16. It feels like Christmas when there's a new photo shoot! Thank you for the pleasure of viewing Cathy's latest look, and anticipating the blessed event. Well done!

  17. Love it! Especially her coat. Cathy looks like a very happy mother to be. :)

  18. haha, you look so great Cathy, pregnancy suits you :)

  19. Trés chic! I love the black accents with the pink. Even pregnant, Cathy retains her gamine charm. Thanks for another delightful vignette!

  20. Poor Cathy, she is obviously too large now to reach down and paint her toe nails. She is looking lovely, though and the opera coat is a winner.

  21. That Cathy is quite the little minx, isn't she? She is simply radiant in her pink opera coat, and she doesn't seem to care one lick about what folks might be whispering as to the paternity. She's a modern woman, that one!

  22. The outfit is fabulous and that opera coat will go on looking good even when Cathy is in the last stage where one seems to have morphed into a whale. The girl has great style (or gets great style advice?)

  23. Viva la Cathy! She does look younger and glowing somehow. I must admit I was skeptical about that smock but I'm amazed at how good it looks.
I am concerned however at who will be with her at the birth?

  24. Hilarious is not a word that comes to mind. 'Lovely' is a word that does. With that special glow...and with a fabulous wardrobe. That opera coat is to die for!!!

  25. Cathy, as usual, looks fabulous...the maternity look suits her; sans the cigarette of course :(

I hope Cathy is thinking post baby (babies) fashion; we all expect nothing but pure fabulousness from her as a new mother. I recently saw a lovely vintage bath apron pattern on Etsy and totally imagined Cathy bathing her new born wearing such a garment.

  26. If you're ever looking to unload that coat, CALL ME! I love it!!

  27. I'm surprised Cathy can get through her day in those heels. You may need to take her shopping for something more comfortable.

    Love the smock and coat!

  28. Amazing! How you get a frumpy looking house coat to be so freakin" glamorous astounds me. Love the whole look. Can Cathy elevate the style quotient of NYC simply by taking a stroll? I think so!

  29. Cathy should have a daytime talk show.

  30. I love the opera coat! Really stylish and elegant!

  31. Love the pics, especially love the coat. And I thought Cathy's ankles were holding up very well, considering her delicate condition.

    (Oh, BTW...it's a boy.)

  32. Love the look and am pulling for Brian the scenic designer as Daddy...

  33. Great pictures. I was wondering about the father. I hope he will be able to celebrate the birth! You really must get her to stop smoking.

  34. Awesome. I particularly love Cathy's coat.

Hmm, does this mean you'll get to stitch up some baby clothes come summer? Vintage children's patterns can be kind of addictive (I seem to keep buying them despite having rather large, non-vintage-inclined children.)

  35. How stylish !
And so much better than the nowadays maternity clothes ! (although I'm still on the fence about the skirt, but hey, Cathy knows best).
The girl has impeccable taste, obviously - the father can only be the crème de la crème.

  36. Beautiful!!!! The coat really is lovely. And, as always, Cathy carries herself with poise.

Will there be clothes for baby at some point?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wonderful!! Loved it...also that lovely looking weather in NYC in April!

  38. Wow! What a great outfit! The colors work together so beautifully. I agree with Mainelydad. You took a frumpy, muu-muu-type house coat and made it look absolutely fah-bulous, dah-ling. I’m also amazed at how quickly you made the entire ensemble. I give Cathy credit for struttin’ her stuff in those heels. What a gal! The photo shoot is also really beautiful, with the sunshine, flowers and asbestos warnings. Well done! I really do hope Cathy can ditch the ciggy habit.

  39. Cathy is indeed radiant. Love the outfit. Slide show had me LOL.

  40. Gee, Cathy sure looks swell!

  41. Very nice work... the maternity suite is lovely! As is Cathy of course.
BTW, she's carrying quite low... I think Richard is right...it's a boy.

  42. Wow! The pregnancy outfit looks great on Cathy and the photos and story really had me giggling.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes. Lovely is the word. And that opera coat is to die for! Elegantly contructed and beautifully lined.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love the stories that go along with Cathy's photo shoots. She looks fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd love to be on the streets of New York and run into one of Cathy's fashion shoots, especially seeing her walk down sidewalk with that coat billowing out behind - fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think all the photos are great. What happened to the styles of the 50s and 60s? If all expecting mothers dressed like Cathy the world would be a much prettier place.

    ReplyDelete
  47. But I so wanted to see how that scooped skirt works over the bump!!

Ah well. The outfit is lovely, the color and cut of that coat is to die for (that will absolutely work after the baby comes), and Cathy, Cathy, Cathy, please stay away from cigarettes and asbestos!

  48. I wish we all lived closer and could pile into Cathey's apt for a baby shower. I have some cute things in mind for the little bundle!! Yes dear Cathey. Please put the cig down. If nothing else it will ruin that Pond's complexion fo your's.
