Peter's Patriotic Pants!

Readers, it's been a while since I've sewn something totally frivolous and fun.

See that fabric up top?  It's part of a four-yard piece of vintage red, white, and blue cotton canvas I picked up a few years ago at the Chelsea Flea Market.  After my fitting with Val last Friday, I decided to treat myself to some completely selfish sewing and to use some of that great vintage fabric.

A day and a half later -- ta da!  Just in time for the July 4th holiday.

I made these jeans using Kwik Sew 3504, a pattern I've used many times before.  This time I narrowed them a little more in the hips and leg for a somewhat leaner look.

I didn't have to buy any special notions for this project.  I even found a white metal zipper in my stash -- not even sure where that came from!

I had these great old buttons I wanted to use on the pants but they were really too small for the waistband (I ended up using a large white plastic one).  I may save them for a jacket I hope to eventually make with the remaining yardage, which is substantial.  Aren't they perfect?

I totally love these pants.  I was going to add belt loops but then decided that I'll never wear a belt with these: it would cover up the cool waistband.

I made the front pocket bags out of a cotton gingham remnant from my stash -- the very same fabric I used on one of my very first sewing projects, a pair of men's gingham boxers, eight years ago.

A few more red, white, and blue pics for you patriotic types.  The shirt and jacket are both me-makes as well.

I hope all my American readers are enjoying the Independence Day holiday today and please be careful with the fireworks.

Have a great day, everybody!

  3. Perhaps only in NYC. (I do recall my mom had a rather fabulous, star-spangled, red, white and blue pantsuit for the bicentennial, with matching hat. Your pants took me right back there, for good or bad, who can say?)

    1. I used Butterick 4362, which is a vintage Seventies men's jacket and pants pattern. You may be able to find a copy for sale online somewhere. I narrowed the collar to give it a more contemporary look.

  18. Peter, I just went back again to look, especially at the vintage buttons that you did not use. Large plastic buttons can be "blah" if they are very shiny (can't see yours in the picture) and often do not want to match anything because they reflect whatever color is nearby. If I buy them, I do a very light sanding with very fine grit sandpaper. Really improves their character. The surprise zipper was given to you by the Sewing Fairy who rewards us for great work. Remember all those goodies you have found in your fabric stash and cannot remember buying? I like her -- and she pays much better than the Tooth Fairy. Hope you enjoyed the 4th.
