I'm finally ready for my close-up, readers!
Exciting news: I'm starting a weekly vlog, to be posted every Sunday.
For those who don't know what a vlog is, it's basically a blog in video form. It's especially recommended for lazy readers and those suffering eye strain.
Below is a small taste of what's to come (and a test of my good angles). I'm expecting most posts to be approximately 5 minutes long.
If you have any topics or questions you'd like me to cover this coming Sunday, let me know in a comment below or on my YouTube channel.
Always start with ootd! (Outfit of the day.) Lip sync regularly, and take us shopping often... and a blog week in review, I'd like a bicycle feature, just show us what it's like riding around New York. A doggie walk feature too. Show us what Michael cooked for dinner sometimes, and oh, of course, a peek at the current sewing project.
I'd also welcome the occasional cameo appearance by Michael (singing) and Cathy (I don't think we've heard her voice). Maybe the three of you could belt out a number to kick of the VLOG.
If your previous videos are anything to go by, the VLOG is going to be brilliant (New Year's Eve duet, Michael singing in German and dogs on the treadmill come to mind).
Some regular features might include modeling a newly sewn item in different locations in the NYC area (a fashion travelogue), an educational segment (intro to serging, selecting fabric for a particular project or vice-versa, buying a vintage machine, how to read a pattern, how to measure a dog for doggie clothing, etc.), interviews with people connected to sewing/fashion/your inspiration, new finds and trends, a lifestyle section that isn't necessarily connected to sewing/clothing/fashion, manly grooming products for the metrosexual, perhaps a 'What Not to be Caught Dead In' segment including fashion/dark alleys/mystery/and a policeman cameo, a salute to Hollywood including sites that have been seen in movies and t.v. but with a fashion angle...well, I'm sure you'll come up with all kinds of good ideas. And music, always good music. If you have fun making them, I can guarantee we'll have fun watching them!
You sound exactly like I thought you would and that's RARE. Beware of the tendency to sound like Mr. Rogers tho'... I'd love to see you go RTW window shopping sometime - perhaps fall and spring and hear what you think of current men's fashion. I'll definitely watch whatever you choose to vote about. And the dog asleep on the couch behind you? Better keep that happening too! Ta!
Your voice is sooo cute, I didn't remember that, even though I have watched your previous videos. Do you have a prompter? :D You do sound a bit like you're talk-ing so that e-very-one can under-stand :)
There are some great suggestions above (I'd definitely like lots of NYC location shooting). Maybe you could also host MPB vlog days where your reader's vlog on a theme!
While I love the uniqueness of each persons take on these vlogs - one of the easiest for me to watch (as in clear, well done, informative) is this one http://www.youtube.com/user/TheDailyConnoisseur She does wardrobes, makeup, hairstyles nad sometimes just topics of the day. I also personally like the 8-10 minute time frames. I know some can't handle that length with their connection parameters - but 8-10 minutes seems to allow plenty of time to have those moments when we just need several seconds to really get a good look at that special ensemble or to give a thorough demonstration of some point. This will be fun!
I'm thinking you don't need suggestions from anyone. You have a great speaking voice and I'm sure whatever you vlog about will be enjoyable. And this is the first time I've ever heard of a vlog!
Hi Peter! Just wanted to say that I have been enjoying your blog very much the past 6 months or so. I think it turns out that I work just a few blocks from your apartment (I'm not a stalker - though I feel like one-, but you posted pictures of the demolition of a couple of buildings that I regularly walk past). Anyways - looking forward to the vlog and the rest of you posts!
First of all, that's one of my all-time favorite creepy movies. Second -- the vlog sounds fabulous! I love both your humor posts and the ones where you share your process. In the vlog posts, I would love to see a demonstration of where/how to oil your Featherweight or care/maintenance of one of your other vintage machines, or a demonstration of a tricky construction method you're working on... Or an interview with your cousin Cathy, Babba Wawa style. Or a video tour of one of your favorite fabric shops, if they would allow it. Basically, just about anything you do, we'll love it.
suggestions: figuring our what pieces might be "missing" from wardrobe (how many black pants and blouses does a person need?, if not black what?) figuring out your "season" colorwise easy patterns for beginners? overcoming phobic regard for sewing machines? how to organize closet when space is limited? set up of sewing area? storage ideas for fabric and supplies? sewing room tours of fellow sew-ers( hmm, looks a little wrong without the hyphen)? Sewists? tour of flea market? fabric store? looking forward to viewing this new feature for a lazy Sunday
I love it. Your not too Stuart Smalley sweet or Bianca Del Rio mean. Your very well modulated. I do love the written word, you can convey (especially with your graphics and culture references) so much and the reader takes what he/she feels. However, talking is intimate and opens new vistas.I can't wait to see the ideas and topics that you bring to lucky readers of your blog. I definitely would like to know when after you bought your first machine how the sewing bug bit you. You really started from ground zero and just took off with sewing. I don't think there is another male sewing blogger who is as prolific as you are. Looking forward
I would rather listen to a Vlog then read. I am a lazy reader and I would prefer just to listen to what you want to share and have to say. I spend a lot of time on You Tube listening to advise and watching techniques where sewing and crafts are concerned. I can't wait to see yours.
How about some travel vlogging? That's video travel logging, oh you figured it out, never mind. Those of us out here in the fringes (can you get any further away than Seattle?), would love to see those places you take so much for granted. For example, the Flea Markets, the street just outside your apt., FIT, your favorite fabric stores, the corner diner, maybe an outing with the Mood bloggers. How about strapping on a Go Pro video camera and just going about your business?
I have a topic suggestion: selecting a sewing machine. I just went through a very tortured process of replacing my Singer Quantum CXL that had an irreplaceable computer board. I wasn't sure how to go -- new, used, researching prices, matching my sewing to the machine's strengths, etc. I ended up, after much nail biting, wavering on expense, and multiple failed bids on eBay, getting a Bernina 440QE at a price I could stomach. I am a one-machine sewer (with serger accompaniment), but it would be great to know about how you do your research, how you learned about which are the keeper machines, and what machines have continued to be your go-to machines. Thanks! Pam
This is brilliant. Your blog makes me long to travel to NYC just to see the Garment District or look at some of the amazing shops. Can I vote for a "trash find of the week" slot? :)
Oh no! I am never in a situation to be able to watch videos when I am looking at blogs...I'm sad at the thought of missing out on any of your content. I am sure they will be awesome. Good luck on your new vloggy adventure!
I'm a native New Yorker and sewing fanatic! I started sewing in 2009 and today make all my own clothes using vintage sewing machines and vintage patterns, in addition to sewing for private clients. Welcome to the warm and whimsical world of Male Pattern Boldness, where the conversation is sewing, style, fashion, fabric, and more!
Ohhhh! Can't wait!

ReplyDeleteGosh, Peter, you are a nice man! You sound as great as you look on video; all the best with your vlog! Anne-Marie.

ReplyDeleteDoes this mean that if you make more pants we get to watch you model them project runway style?

One more reason to love Sundays!
ReplyDeleteCould you end each segment by kissing Willie on his forehead spot?
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun. I look forward to it.
