OMG, friends, how did I forget to tell you? I have an article in the current issue of
Vogue Patterns!
As you can see up top, it's about treadle sewing machines (the machine of our post-Peak Oil future!), but please don't let that discourage you from picking up a copy (April/May 2012). However, one of you lucky readers won't have to do that because --
I'm giving away one copy FREE!
I'm not just saying this because I'm in it: this is a superb sewing magazine full of great fashion and excellent sewing tips and techniques. There's even an article by Elaine May, aka
The Selfish Seamstress. Of course, she only gets half the space I do but who's counting?
Followers and lurkers across the globe are eligible for the giveaway, and all you have to do to qualify is say you're interested -- how's that for easy? You have the entire weekend to enter and I'll announce the winner on Monday.
Of course, if you don't win -- and some of you won't -- you might consider a subscription to
Vogue Patterns; you can find the info you need about that
here.
In other news, yesterday in the mail I received the highly coveted (or not) Butterick 5896, which I purchased only days ago on eBay in something of a
post-Oscar-gown peplum panic. Have the last twenty-five years been kind to this 1987 pattern? Michael finds it hideous (
It's so Suzanne Sugarbaker, he said); I see possibilities, but then I'm a sucker for a boned bodice and lace overlay.
Not sure about the shape of that peplum however...
Readers, I can't talk about peplums any more this week. Let's talk photography! As you know I have a
brand new-to-me, used camera, a Canon Digital Rebel XT, and I really love it. This is my first DSLR (That's short for digital single lens reflex -- or is it reflux?) camera and it's extremely versatile: you can change the lenses and everything! Here are a few early pics I've taken and
MPB completists can view even more pics
here.
Sadly, one of the disadvantages of a sharp lens is that it shows up those facial flaws you're used to seeing slightly blurry. It may be time for some Vaseline -- or a veil.
Readers, that's all for today. Please don't forget to throw your hat in the ring for the
Vogue Patterns magazine.
Have a great day, everybody!
Lol . . . I almost spit out my coffee. I hope all your readers understand that the Vaseline is for the camera lens ;). Would love a copy of the Vogue Magazine.
ReplyDeleteOh, dear. That was immediately what I thought of, Doris Day and the soft focus lens. I am too hopelessly provincial, lol.
DeleteMe-me-me! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou sing beautifully, Anne!
DeleteEhm, yes, I got so excited that I forgot to congratulate you. But I won't sing at you again. :-)
DeleteCongratulations on your article. The nearest I've ever come to being published in Vogue patterns was when they printed a query I made on the letters page.
ReplyDeleteHardly the same thing!
Please count me in for the giveaway.
I would loooooove a copy! :)
ReplyDeleteI am most definitely interested!
ReplyDeleteAnother excellent giveaway! I'd sure to love to win that prize. It'll make great reading as I have a hospital stay coming up-I'll need fabulous reading material for that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting the give-away (and I am looking forward to Elaine's article as well as yous!), and congrats on being published Vogue Patterns!
Congrats! I 'd love to read the article!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome is that? And yes, I'm interested, Peter!
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a photographer. At one time, a pro, but upon finding out how it didn't pay the bills, he reinvented himself and decided to do something else. I only mention this as a qualifier-- I have a very good camera because of that. When Dad found out that I was going to need a camera, he went on ebay and picked me up a Nikkormat. It's actually older than I am, manual focus, and made by Nikon. And, according to dad, Olympus and Nikon make the best cameras out there, and like sewing machines, old cameras are better than the new plastic ones. (This was right before the digital explosion.)
I had a few lessons with Dad, but I never got truly good at it. Which is why I changed it out to a Nikon Cool Pics about a year ago that has an autofocus!
Congrats on the article. I would love to win it.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely interested.
ReplyDeleteI tend to use Photoshop as my cover up.
I would love a copy too. It's not easily available in France.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have a article in Vogue patterns. You write very good here on the blog, and good pictures.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of the machine, would love to read the article.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your article, and I would LOVE to win a copy! I've never even seen a Vogue Pattern magazine before, we're so deprived here ;-)
ReplyDeleteSign me up! Does it come autographed?
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!! The issue looks like a good one, I would love to have a copy!
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure about the Butterick pattern, the strapless version isn't as dated as the short version. Michael is right though, it is a bit Sugarbakerish :)
I don't think I've ever seen that magazine before. Apparently I am sheltered. Must check it out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a fun giveaway.
Congrats on having an article in Vogue! How cool! I would love to check it out.
ReplyDeleteFingers cross its me xx
ReplyDeleteinterested!
ReplyDeletewait, we can't talk about peplums anymore? i was just getting over my knee jerk "OMG that is soooo eighties i remember wearing a hot pink poly taffeta one to a sweet 16 party" reaction to them!
however, i am worried about your ken doll and the looming doggie behind him. does he know he's about to be a chew toy??
I'm playing too! Congratulations for the article.
ReplyDeleteI not that fan of the butterick pattern also...
I have a subscription, so won't enter the giveaway, but wanted to tell you how happy I was to come across your face when first paging through my issue. Great article. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article! Put me in the running...thanks for the opportunity! Mary
ReplyDeleteI'll cut to the chase: gimme that magazine. Congrats and thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am interested!
ReplyDeleteNice, can`t get it in germany, so please count me in.
ReplyDeleteVaseline??? REALLY? For what?
Congratulations! I'm interested. x
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read the magazine!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for another article!
I'd love to win the magazine! Congrats on your article!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the Vogue Patterns article!!! I'm interested! Hmm. You and Selfish in the same magazine. This has lots of possibilities.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I thought the Ken doll was a Photoshop’d you!
I think the Butterick strapless view looks rather contemporary, while the view with sleeves does look like a “Sugarbaker.”
I am sure you weren't serious about the Vaseline, but I have to say it anyway. Please don't put it on your lens, it could ruin it.
ReplyDeleteMichael is right about the pattern.
Put my name in the hat, bag, bowl etc for the magazine.
Elle, I meant for my FACE! ;)
DeleteCongrats on the new camera! Count me in for the magazine and did I tell you that your sewing machine article was in Sew Today, a UK magazine in February?? I think it's Vogue's UK edition magazine. My local fabric store might still have some available if you want me to pick one up and mail it to you!!! You're an international star :)
ReplyDeleteMe and Pia Zadora!
DeleteTrue Story, once upon a time my brother picked up an old treadle machine to fix, which I was entranced by the idea of but I wasn't actually sewing at the time so nothing came of it. SO jealous of whoever picked it up the day we finally put it out on the curb! Count me in!
ReplyDeleteI'de love to win this magazine, especially from you. You are becomeing so famous...this is your 2nd sewing machine article...I'm thinking. I got the other issue where you did show and tell of your collection.. Another fun read. Oh, and G L with your camera and many features. At first I thought the picture of Ken and the dog was Michael and you had shrunk him in the picture. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win the magazine too - please add my name to the drawing- Plus congrats on the new article in it.
ReplyDeleteNow I know why I put the Vogue magazine back on the store shelf - I was meant to win a copy! Thank you for the giveaway Peter and congratulations on your second Vogue article.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for your article! I would love to win, I like reading you.
ReplyDeleteLove the pic of the boy Barbie and your puppy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article. I learned to sew on my grandmother's treadle, and have beem thinking of looking for one of my own. Will your article increase my hankering? Can't wait to read it!
Congrats! That's amazing. First Vogue, then....I can't wait to enter the giveaway for your book one day! (I jest; I'd buy it, of course). Consider me interested in this giveaway.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article...isn't it nice to get the acceptance letter vs. the rejection!! Enjoy your writing style and perspective on the older patterns and looks. I laugh at something you say every time I read an article.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to buy an issue of the mag, so that they know articles by you sell their issues (we want them to keep asking you to write don't we?). I do enjoy their articles and how-tos.
oooh congratulations on the article, Peter! But don't enter me in the giveaway because I have a subscription to Vogue Patterns.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of the Ken doll with the scary huge dog.
Great job on the article! Please enter me to win a copy of the magazine. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! please enter me in the drawing. :)
ReplyDeleteThe article looks Terrific! And so does the rest of the mag you've shown us. Count me in Please!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, the shape of the peplum is questionable. The March issue of Burda even has some, and they're all straight across.
I would love to win these Vogue magazine. I've been coveting my friend's treadle machine for years. She promised the machine to me next visit out to see her. I don't dare like her see the article, I'll never get it. By the way-cute profile pic of you in the article!
ReplyDeleteI am very interested, Peter. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteoooh! Me, please! and congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI got a treadle in October. It's a beautiful, fully functioning machine with perfectly smooth stitching, all the attachments and five bobbins; it's a true gem. I completely agree, these are the machines of the future!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your article, I'd love to read it.
laurie (@) shiny-objects (dot) com
I always enjoy your posts. I'd love to check out your treadle article. My hubby's into vintage machines and we both love fashion. Although the Oscars highlighted the humble peplum, the icky 80's version still gives me the willies.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article!
Kris
I'll de-lurk myself for a prize like that! I'd love a copy!
ReplyDeleteAm v confused about the vaseline though. Neither lens nor face sounds like a good idea to me (or am I just lacking imagination?)
I would love to learn about the vintage machines. I have two myself and would like to get them up and running.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article!

**Please count me in **
ReplyDeleteInterested?
ReplyDeleteI WANT!
I WANT!
I WANT!
So Peter's penned another piece...can't wait to read it.
Meanwhile, Michael lost a 1/2 point for speaking against the Designing Women. Suzanne is sacred, and we all simply know this at an early age and never discuss it. In the company of certain men, he could have his card pulled for such an infraction.
Old guard, here.
I am interested in the magasine giveaway... consider my hat thrown in!
ReplyDeletePS.... unless you are a real live Grecian Goddess, leave your peplum at home!!! yucky.
ReplyDeleteOoh yes please! Hat is duly lobbed across the Atlantic!
ReplyDeleteI would be honoured to be considered for the give-away!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely like to read the article and the whole magazine we don't get it here in Perth Australia since our Borders shutdown!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your publication!! I'd love to have that Vogue!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this copy. If not, I'm going to go out and buy it anyway. My sister (the one of the 3 of us who DOESN'T sew!) inherited our great-grandma's treadle. Someday I'm going to add one to my collection. I'm looking forward to reading your article.
ReplyDeleteI just want to say congratulations Peter! Yea! I'm going to snap up a copy so I can read your article!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had a treadle. She sewed for seven people on that machine. How I wish I had it now! Great post as usual. I would love to win the magazine.
ReplyDeleteOk, i'll post for the chance to win a Vogue magazine!
ReplyDeleteI should absotively win the mag, because I (finally!) got my treadle set up last night! Timing is everything, so..... me, please! Pretty please? :::blinkblinkblink:::: :)
ReplyDeleteOMG a treadle article; i'm swooning with excitement! Life hasn't been the same since i became a retirement village for a 1948 Singer 201 treadle! I loved the old gal; please count me in for the give-away.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long week without you Peter; your absence was felt keenly.
Hi Peter, would LOVE to win the mag!!!!!!!! Congratz!!!!! We love your irreverant style, and appreciate your insights. As for peplums, some do look good. I have been looking at my vintage peplum patterns (pre-Oscar night). I guess I was ahead of the game.... Cathie and Robert too.
ReplyDeleteI am interested (that is easy ;)).
ReplyDeletePeplums, ...not so interested. Though I must admit that anything you do is so highly entertaining that I enjoy reading about the process, sometimes, despite myself!
Missed, missed, missed you the past week. Congrats on the article. Put me in for the magazine. Michael could be right about Suzanne Sugarbaker. I was thinking maybe Dynasty ---- Joan Collins???
ReplyDeleteSewgranny
I only missed two days!
DeleteI'd love to win the magazine. I have to say that I really like the pattern. I have very fond memories of the 80s and don't hate the fashion as much as other people seem to.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered to win the magazine. :-)
ReplyDeleteWould love to win a copy of the magazine!
ReplyDeleteCount me in!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the magazine and to see your article there! I can never find it on any newsstand here in LA, don't know why. I guess I'll just have to subscribe.
ReplyDeleteI must admit, I am slightly miffed with Michael. Is he speaking ill of the Sugarbakers?!
ReplyDeleteEither way, I would like to put my hat in the ring for the Vogue magazine. :)
YAY! Thanks so much for the chance to win.
ReplyDelete... and congratulations on being published in such a fancy pancy magazine. Woo-hoo!
I would love a copy. I cant buy the magazine here in Australia where I live, but sure enjoy reading it when I can lay my hands on a copy.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to reading your article. Well done on being published in such a great magazine.
I'm so interested to win the Vogue magazine, I can't found it in Spain. Congratulations on your publication, but especially for your blog is very interesting to see the magnificent garments that you sew for Caty (for you and Michael too, of course). I can not wait to see her wearing the dress butterick.
ReplyDeleteI am a lurker, and here's my ring. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have that magazine. As a new owner of a Singer Red Eye treadle machine from 1910, I would love to read about treadles in the magazine. I may just have to find this issue if I don't win it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Peter! Personally I think that peplum would suit Cathy down to the ground. She has the perfect figure to carry it off! Oh and please catch my hat as it sails across the waters aiming for the centre of that ring!
ReplyDeleteI would be keen to be considered for some Vogue mag goodness, but please ... step away from the peplum!
ReplyDeleteHi Peter - congratulations on the Vogue Patterns article. I love your photos and find your blog really interesting - wish I had found it a long time ago! Please put my name in the barrell for a copy of the magazine.
ReplyDeleteWriting for Vogue is awesome and yes, put my name in the hat, I would love to have a mag with your name in it!
ReplyDeleteI loved your last article, can't wait to see this one, too! I'm so IN.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Peter, I would love a copy please count me in!
ReplyDeletePlease count me in for the magazine!
ReplyDeleteI'd love a copy of the magazine! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a hat to throw in the ring, Peter, how about a pair of underwear? I'd like the copy you're giving away. Pick me!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be entered!
ReplyDeletePeter congrats on your unfettered ascent in the world of sewing...I think I stole part of that line from the film Philadelphia. ergghhh. Wish I could get a subscribtion to Vogue patterns here in Romania, much less a treadle machine. I think they are solely used as decoration to make bars "hip" around here.
ReplyDeleteI would like the copy to read Your article!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the article! Count me in for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteCount me in for the drawing! Thanks for sharing your bounty!
ReplyDeleteHow neat to be featured in Vogue! I'd love to win a copy. I always feel sophisticated telling people I made a dress from a Vogue pattern, it's just a great sounding word.
ReplyDeleteCongrats for the article, please do count me in.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win! Thanks for your informative, entertaining blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the giveaway. Congrats on being in the magazine.
ReplyDeleteHere's my hat, Peter!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! Would love to have your give-away Vogue Sewing magazine.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting featured in the magazine, and I would love to win a copy of it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great blog. I'm inspired to make more clothes. I'd enjoy having a copy of the Vogue magazine to remember and admire your creative talents and charming and witty personality
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your article, would be lovely to read the whole mag.
ReplyDeleteYour pattern is giving me flashbacks to a jacket I made and loved with an awesome-at-the-time peplum. I'd recommend a curved not angled point
Well done on getting the Article in Vogue patterns. I'd love to have copy of this magazine as i've never read it. I get burda style, but find the patterns rather dull most of the time. I'd love some new inspiration.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Congratulations. Count me in, I haven't read a Vogue pattern mag in 20 + years!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog today. Count me in!
ReplyDeleteBella
Congratulations on your article - you've come a long way baby!

ReplyDeleteI have been meaning check out this mag, but just haven't gotten to it. Congrats on the article!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see this issue
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased for you Peter! You must be proud. And I'm sure Elaine is seething with jealousy, which just makes it better, Non?
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely interested in the magazine you're giving away. If I win, I insist you autograph the article.
Really? A sewing mag worth reading??? Cool!
ReplyDeleteInterested!
ReplyDeletelrs_member@mac.com
Very interested! And congratulations on the article!
ReplyDeleteWow, congratulations on being published! I would love a copy!
ReplyDeletePut me in the raffle!
ReplyDeleteAlso, peplums are awesome.
congrats! id love to win..i think im going to need to get a subscription :) raineoc@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI'm in. Congratulations on the article Peter.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Peter! Regretably, I decline to enter your contest as I already subscribe. What a surprise to see youin this month's issue.
ReplyDeleteActually the peplum is your friend if you need a bit of breadth across the hips(and some women do, of course) and if a woman has a small waist a nice peplum sets the womanly shape off beautifully.
ReplyDeleteOh, I got so wound up about the peplum I forgot to say I will be looking forward to reading your timely article (I reaally don't expect to win the mag) ;I was in fact thinking of getting a treadle machine myself! It would be good to have it for out in the country!
ReplyDeleteAnd it's funny, but just after you wrote about the Singer Genie, I ran across one in a thrift store! I am looking for a Singer that can convert to a chain stitch but unfortunately the Genie did not seem to be one of those!
