Here's your jumpsuit!
I've had this vintage Seventies pattern for a while now. Please, no jokes. I mean, I know. That short white terrycloth number, when was that in fashion? Nonetheless, I'd bought it: I had to sew it.
I'd attempted to make this last fall with some stretchy knit, a bolt of which I'd found on the street. The result was a flop: the fabric was simply too elastic to hold its shape and I hadn't yet perfected my invisible zipper technique (Wonder Tape, Wonder Tape, Wonder Tape).
I'd bought this cotton/poly knit two weeks ago, thinking I'd make my mother a robe, but she's averse to horizontal stripes, apparently. So I had to come up with some substitute use. I really love that Good and Plenty color scheme.
Michael has been wanting some lounging togs for a while now, and this fit the bill. Admittedly, it's not something one would wear in front of guests, but alone, in the privacy of one's home, why not?
I got to use my serger -- which I finally rethreaded with black thread -- and that helped a lot. I tried hard to line up those stripes: very challenging with a knit. The pattern actually says not suitable for stripes, so of course I had to try.
This is actually an extremely comfortable and toasty little jumpsuit, albeit a little "Boys in the Band" for most men.
Here's the Valentines Day card shot, hubba hubba.
Wait -- I almost forgot: ta da!
I hope you're all spending the day with someone you love, even if it's just yourself.
Oh, and don't forget to enter my anniversary giveaway contest. The deadline is 10 pm EST tonight (Sunday).
See you tomorrow!
That's awesome, I love it!!!! Although you need a neck accessorie of some kind. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat's toasty? How warm do you guys keep your apartment?
ReplyDeleteI actually have no words.
ReplyDeleteNo wait. I do. No wait. I don't.
wow.
no wait. I am like 99% sure that at some point, somewhere, sometime, Sean Connery wore that white terry jumpsuit in something I saw. I SWEAR TO GOD. White terry jumpsuit shorts.
You know, that actually looks really comfy! I'd wear one.
ReplyDeleteIt does look comfy! Nice job on the stripes. I vaguely remember Sean Connery in a white terry version of this too. It looks great on both of you. Sort of reminds me of an early 20th century men's bathing suit.
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic! And you've done a great job matching all those stripes.
ReplyDeleteI never thought I'd think a romper was even remotely cool, but that thing is kinda neat.
ReplyDeleteDamn! That actually looks really comfy. My eye has also been caught by 70's jumpsuit patterns lately, I think they can look quite stylish! You definitely need something around your neck (gold chain? haha!).
ReplyDeleteI just figured out what it reminds me of, Peter. And it isn't exactly a jumpsuit. Think about it made in blue and white stripey wool and you're on the right track--it's a men's bathing suit from oh, turn of the century--Victorian! like this. Check out the one piece striped one a bit down the page. It's labeled 1910.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a jumpsiut-ey kind of person. Anything that requires me to almost fully undress to use the bathroom isn't my cup of tea.
OMG, THAT is funny, brightfeather! Thanks for that link.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your comments everyone. I also seem to remember seeing Sean Connery in something like this once...maybe I dreamed it!
It's Goldfinger in which connery wears his baby blue terry cloth jumpsuit thing than man should not be allowed to wear. It's baby blue, it's got a *belt*. (and pockets!)

It's perfect. It makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteI am totally impressed with myself for remembering (mostly) that about Sean Connery, who is not (I'm sorry to say) my favorite Bond. Seriously. Impressed. Bow down before me. Bow!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteOh my gawd, I love it!
ReplyDeleteYou both look very cute, if I may say so. The 'suit looks good. The stripe matching looks pretty good, but the wonder tape would help there too.
ReplyDeleteYou and Michael look so hip and cool! It's interesting what men wore in the 60's and 70's and it seems that patterns then reflected what was worn or what was en vogue. I don't know if it is just me or one of many or a few that styles then REALLY flatter men very nicely!
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS AWESOME!!!! I LOVE it .... god I'm so jealous, I have a giant Peter Robin Style onsie and it's getting really worn... now I want one like yours!!!
ReplyDeleteYou both look really great in it. Michael looks really cuffed (extremly happy that his beloved has made him a gift) in it.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! It's like a victorian bathing suit.
ReplyDeleteI want thissssssss
