My first was ...I'm a Kenmore fan from way back. My first was a 158-14001 that my parents gave me when I graduated high school in 1969. Mom had begun teaching me when I was about seven so when they gave me the Kenmore, I dove right in. I LOVED that machine and used it for 25 years or so, then I (stupidly) sold it to a girl who was learning to sew. I've since found a duplicate which now sits proudly in its own original table alongside my big modern electronic quilting machine. As great as the modern machine is, my 14001 and the rest of my vintage metal “Kennies”, will continue to work beautifully when the modern machine is little more than recycling plant fodder. I've been collecting, fixing up and maintaining vintage Kenmores (and some others) for a while now and as part of my collection I have a 158-1803, a 158-1880, two 158-1040's (one working, one I'm fixing), a 158-1060, and a beautifully ugly old 120-491 from 1954 which I’ve dubbed “Monster”. He has a 1.5amp motor and a chain drive. I went over that beast from top to bottom, inside and out, cleaning and oiling. I also cleaned and oiled his motor, put on a new power cord/foot pedal combo, and a new size 16 needle. I began testing him with layers of denim. Even with eight layers under the presser foot, he didn’t strain or slow down, you would have thought it was butter. He’s only a straight stitch, but what a machine!
I adore my little 158-1040! I call her "Piglet" because she's as cute as a newborn baby piggy. She is smooth-running and quiet, loves twin needles and does wonders with knits. She's easy to use is great for any sewing projects other than those using heavyweight fabric or leather.
These antique and vintage machines were built to last for lifetimes, as evidenced by the preponderance of treadle and early electric machines from the 19th century still in use today. Once restored or refurbished, they work very well. Any metal, well-engineered, well-built vintage machine will go that long and longer if cared for properly. It's sad the greedy bottom line and planned obsolescence took them off the market.
P.S. I LOVE the name of your blog!
Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13064779290602201896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991166428290808171.post-59487165735261896262021-01-22T16:30:16.518-05:002021-01-22T16:30:16.518-05:00Hi, I’ve just discovered your blog, a real inspira...Hi, I’ve just discovered your blog, a real inspiration. I have a similar machine badged for the Uk market as a frister rossmann cub 7. My mum had the frister rossmann equivalent of the model that you have. I’m really new to it but have been repairing all sorts and am starting to alter clothes now. I even repaired a pair of rugby boots on my machine!! It’s a strong little workhorse. I’m working up the nerves to try making something from scratch next. Thanks for the insights into your journey. My Grandmother was a seamstress and now at 38 I've decided I want to learn how to sew! I'm conditioning these two machines myself [the 158.523 was $60 and the model 32 free; both in excellent condition. I don't wear glasses - I have 20/20] BUT I must say, my eyes have been challenged despite both machines being equipped with a light. What type lghting do you suggest? They are swell machines and I would never hesitate to recommend them: they run like tops and you can service them at home with simple tools and some rags. The bobbin winding post is too wide for modern class 15 bobbins, but I've got a Bernina or two for that job! I worked for Sears back in the day when Kenmore was as sewing machine giant and love those machines! I had one of the machines shown in the add also-the 1803 model was the love of my life until it was stolen out of the back of my AMC Gremilin one night. I cried for days and was able to replace it with a stepdown model, the 1802 which did not have as many attachments but was the same machine head. I still sew mainly on my Kenmore 19412 -early model free arm that I got in 1979-no thoughts of even retiring it as I know it too well to start over, although I do have a 2000 Kenmore that embroideries and stuff, but it is being used for free motion quilting and I don't have to change threads and settings all the time! LOVE my Kenmores!
Bev @ kwiltpharmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00815138849202826555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991166428290808171.post-5070441823702849572018-09-24T10:04:40.138-04:002018-09-24T10:04:40.138-04:00Congrats!
