The Sew Must Go On

Friends, thank you so much for your many words of sympathy regarding Michael's mother.   They mean a great deal to us.

It is time for me to return to sewing.  Having finished my 1920's cotton lawn kimono, next up were the pajamas, using the vintage Butterick pattern I found this summer at the Chelsea Flea Market (see pic above).

Remember how I'd decided to buy different fabric than I'd originally intended: that lilac-colored dotted swiss and the Moorish-style print?

I made the pajama bottoms in the lavender, and the color just didn't look right -- too bright.  So I went back to the fabric store again and picked up more of the -- what would you call it, deep mauve?  Dark raspberry? -- and returned to my original palette.

I'm using the coffee-colored tan for the trim.

I love the way these muted colors look together.

In the notions section of Mood, I found this heavy gold rope -- perfect for the pajama belt!

The pattern is very well-drafted and, since the original instructions are missing, I'm glad the construction was straightforward.

Can we pull off a photo shoot in the next few days?  If I can get that cousin of mine to do a little less twerking and a little more working, we just might.

Have a great day, everybody!

  1. As lovely as the swis dot and patterned fabric are, I think you were right to switch back. The muted tones go with the pattern better, in my opinion. :-)

  2. I second Hazel's assessment. I'm also loving the gold rope as a pajama belt.

  3. To make a loop in one end of your (3-strand) rope, you might want to do an "eye splice", and for the other end an "end splice". Animated here. http://www.animatedknots.com/backsplice/index.php?Categ=splicing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com The splice ends can be tapered on each strand (not shown in the animation) for a much tidier look.

To hook them together, you might use a "sheet bend", animated here. http://www.animatedknots.com/sheetbend/

If that rope is manila, you might find it awfully stiff and scratchy. I found cotton 3-strand rope in the garment district somewhere. MUCH softer.

"Salty" sailors often make just such a belt.

  4. I'm so sorry to hear about Michael's mother. It must be so tough on the both of you. I'm glad you can take some solace in your sewing. The robe looks lovely and the pajamas are coming along beautifully. I'm glad you swapped back to this muted colour palette. However much I love the other fabrics, these are just so much better with that kimono!
