The Completed Striped Shirt + Roy's New Woman!

OK, friends, remember how the striped shirt I pieced together from fabric remnants earlier this week looked like it needed a blue stripe down the front -- to me, anyway?

Voila!

Doesn't that look better?  I cut a blue stripe off the front right facing and topstitched it onto the left front button placket.  (NOTE: The original blue stripe is hidden in the tuck that I had to make to form the front left placket.  That's why you saw two brown stripes next to each other in the top photo, which looked wonky.)

The blue edge is the selvage.

Next, I pieced together enough fabric to make a collar band.

Finally, I added buttonholes and cute vintage plastic buttons and hemmed the shirt.

And here's the finished garment:

Yet again, a shirt I've made looks better on Marcia Michael, so I'm giving it to him.

Meanwhile, I found a girl for Roy: a size 8 PGM residing in an East Village four-story walk-up.  Only $60 (plus cab fare).  I didn't tell you about the $200 size 6 Wolf deal I thought I had wrapped up last week but which got sold out from under me by a very inconsiderate Craigslist seller; I've let it go -- la la la.

I'm content and so is Roy.  He loves to collapse her shoulders.

Baby got back.

I hate to sound heteronormative, but don't you think they look "right" together?  (I admit to hoisting him up a few inches to avoid the Tom & Mimi-Nicole-Katie effect.)

OK, folks, we need a name.  Ava?  Esther?  Lana?

I'm all ears!

  3. If she were mine, or mine to use. . . er shall we just say, if she was part of my household. . . I would be inclined to call her Dale. And find her a permanent little cowgirl hat. Then all you would have to look for is a Trigger. But there I go dating myself again.

  4. Initially, I thought you were being obsessive with the stripes. But, it really does look better this way. Looks great on either of you, but I can see why Michael has it in his closet.

  5. Dale. I mean who ELSE goes with Roy?

It's like Beans & Cornbread. Bread & Butter. Peanut Butter & Jelly. Or something.

  6. Okay, I can't see how you're going to beat "Princess Grace of Monaco."

  7. I don't have any though ts on a name for the new addition, but I just wanted to say thank you for starting my day out with a smile!

  8. The shirt, absolutely, needed the blue stripe...I see it now. Peter, with the addition of the female form you are now ready to start commisioning work!

  9. Great job on balancing out that shirt. I didn't comment then, but definitely felt the imbalance.

Name? Eve. Short and snappy. And so feminine!

  10. I didn't find it crying out to be altered, but I must admit it is improved. And I think it looks better on you, unless it is the photograph and there is not really some slight pulling in Michael's armpits.
Maybe the mannequin need to named "Jan".

    1. I have to say I agree about a certain tightness of the shirt on Michael. But, a chacun son gout, as they say in Marseille.

On other matters, can we have a closeup shot of the topstitched stripe? Genius!

    2. Tina, click on the photo showing the buttons; you'll see the topstitching supersized.

  11. You did miracle piecing the stripes! The shirt is very cute on both of you, but I also believe that fits more to Michael style.

I vote for Eve or Jane... she is always there kind of naked... :D

  12. Definitely better with the blue stripe! I think it looks good on either of you.

    What about Debbie?

  13. I second "Dale" with Roy.

Otherwise, I prefer either Ginger or Katherine.

  14. It looks great on Michael. I'm sure you preshrunk (cuz you're smart that way), but if it's one of those that keeps shrinking it might end up in your closet. Didn't think a stripe that large would look cool with a band collar, but its great!

I like Dale also. Kinda ballzy....it fits.

  16. I love the yoke and yes you're right, the additional blue stripe at the front provides a visual balance to the design of your shirt...love the final result! As for the name, I like your choice of Ava...why not Greta to remain in the field of past screen goddesses? Mine is called Melissa simply because I liked an old French song of the 1980's that was celebrating the beauty of a dark woman called Melissa!

  17. My vote for the dame name: Esmeralda.
    Spicin' it up a bit.

  18. Dolores or Wanda.
Although Dolores and Roy might sound a little better than Roy and Wanda? Dunno.
Can't wait to hear what you pick! :)

  19. I like your Princess Grace of Monaco for PGM.

That shirt, though casual, looks expensive due to your skill at matching stripes and finishing. You both look good in it.

  20. Veda, I've loved that name since Mildred Pierce and it is a great name for a diva.

  21. Lovely shirt. My first thought for the new model was also Dale. But as I don't see horses featuring in your NY life, I'm now thinking royal names. Kate is likely to show up in lots of class lists over the next few decades. But to me Roy's new woman looks more like the current HM. Elizabeth is too staid. How about Lilibett?

  22. I vote for Peggie, because you can hang a coat on her.

  23. Roy and Liza.
Roy Halston's muse was Liza Minelli.

  24. The shirt looks great on both of you!

  25. I think it looks better on Michael, but only because it seems to fit his shoulders a tad more relaxed. The sleeves don't seem to flair up as much on him, and lay more naturally. I think if you tailored to a slightly longer shoulder length it would fit you much better. The point of a bespoke shirt is to fit your exact measurments.

Remeasure yourself and double check the shirt. Beautifully made and great save on all fronts!

  26. You were right about the stripes, but Michael looks better in the shirt because the soft color suits an autumn better. Otherwise it is a toss-up. Wish I could sew like that!

  27. I kind of like Lana! I always know the names of mine right away though (Daphne and Lily), somehow. I like that you fixed it in the way that I suggested, although I don't think I described the process as accurately as you did.

    Myrna
    Lola

    Norma Jean

That's enough starlet names for now..I know you'll come up with something glamorous Peter.

Latvian for Eve, pronounced Yeva (with a very soft e)

Have you made a standard 'muslin' pattern for the both of you? Actually I like to make my standard adaptable patterns for family members out of flannel - adheres nicely to the fabric you're cutting w/o need for any pins. These stash away so neatly and make clothing layout and cutting so easy, adaptable and you know the clothes will always fit perfectly.

Just found you through Elizabeth's "Sewing Machine Obsession" links portal. Great Blog!!

  33. Hi Peter, I've been following your blog for a while and thought that I would give it a mention in a list of sewing bloggers that I included in an article on sewing with vintage patterns that's printed in the current August issue of UK's Vintage Life Magazine. Your approach to sewing fits in perfectly with the theme of the article :-)

  34. Ung, not Dale. Didn't she always get shoved to the background or used as bait by the bad guys to give Roy cause to ride to the rescue? At least in the TV show. As I recall vaguely.

  35. I forgot - nice call on adding the blue stripe to the shirt!

  36. Killer shirt-- I like on you AND on Michael! You're much too clever with your perfect solutions to every problem you encounter! The blue stripe looks perfect!

  37. Loving the ingenuity ans the colours!! Plus it's good to know I'm not the only one who names all their sewing equipment...
