Vogue Patterns Magazine GIVEAWAY + another special announcement!

I'm a little late with this, friends, but I'm excited to be giving away a copy of the December 2012/January 2013 copy of Vogue Patterns with my most recent article in it, all about my favorite vintage sewing machine models!

Of course, this issue of Vogue Patterns is also chock full of expert sewing instruction, beautiful contemporary fashion, vintage pattern reissues, and so much more.

As always, this giveaway is open to MPB readers the whole world over.  But wait -- there's more!

Starting next month, I will be lending my Y chromosome to the marvelous Mood Sewing Network.  I am super-excited about this, friends.  You can read more about the MSN here, but in a nutshell (quoting directly from the site):

Each month Mood Fabrics provides the Mood Sewing Network bloggers with an allowance for fabric that they can spend online at MoodFabrics.com or in our NYC or LA stores. The bloggers, in turn, will sew a garment with Mood fabrics each month and then blog about it on their own blogs and here.

I mean, how cool is that?

Now I have a favor to ask of you:  If you're interested in throwing your hat in the ring for the Vogue Patterns giveaway, it would be great if your comment could include something you'd like me to sew with my Mood fabric.  Anything is possible with the exception of a wedding gown for Cathy.

Is there anything in particular you would like me to make?  (A related sew-along is a possibility too.)

Readers, you have until this coming Sunday at midnight EST to leave a comment and make yourself eligible for the Vogue giveaway.  I'll announce the winner on Monday.

Thanks, as always, for your enthusiastic support and valued feedback.

Have a great day, everybody!

  1. Congratulations on everything! It is well deserved recognition! I will await with anticipation. Best, C

  2. Spring is approaching, and every girl deserves a new Easter frock! I think Cathy deserves it, don't you? :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. How about an Easter dress for Cathy? Mood is far out of my price range, so I don't even go anywhere near their website! (And yes, I want to enter.)

    ReplyDelete
  4. ...but Cathy would look fabulous in a wedding gown!
How about doing a trenchcoat sew along Peter?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Very cool! A waistcoat would be great! Tweedy!

    ReplyDelete
  6. A tote bag that looks as if Mood had a boutique. Nothing pedestrian, sort of a mix of practical with style simplicity (a two or three different fabric composition, please).

    LUV your articles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. amazing!! i'd love to see a spring coat/jacket, and what fabric you'd use for that!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I second the motion for a trench coat sew along! WIth special attention to shoulder adjustments (-:

    ReplyDelete
  9. i'm thrilled that both Vogue and Mood have recognized your contributions to sewing and vintage. i'll be subscribing to the mag and hitting Mood the next time i'm in LA. i think you should make one of those beautiful pairs of slacks that Hepburn wore along with a big colored print blouse and bandanna to match. Cathy has just the body for that delightful combo.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Amazing that you are getting so many great opportunities! With your Mood allowance, I would like to see you make a 50s suit for Cathy, sleek and controlled, very Dovima.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would love to see you make a suit for yourself, even if you use fusibles rather than hand-work- great fit with fantastic fabric- something wowwy!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Congrats! Wait - is the fabric only for Cathy or will you make stuff for you too? I think you should make some new crazy 70s skinny rocker pants in faux-lizard. (What? You asked.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. You should make some menswear so the Mood site will have 2 guys on it. More visibility for guys who sew!

What about a fun suit out of a crazy silk or a brocade?

    ReplyDelete
  14. How about a snappy Victorian or Edwardian smoking jacket?

    ReplyDelete

I would like to see a linen shirt so fine it could get a man without a jacket seated in any restaurant in the world. Or, a Van Helsing coat in cloth. Or, a British style waxed canvas "shooter's jacket". Or, a woman's sheer shirt with "modesty" pockets, fabric of variegated color rather than standard black or white or red.

  16. Hello,
New follower to the MPB blog (google reader), but not a new reader, I've come across this blog quite a few times and enjoy your writing as much as the sewing! So I'd love to be able to read your article on vintage sewing machines!

Also congrats on the Mood Sewing Network nomination I think I already follow all the other bloggers on my reader and they're all great!! Your projects would be a great addition!!

How about sewing a silk button up, seems like you're the king (queen, too?) of button up shirts! and I've been dying to learn to sew with silk, so I would definitely sew along with that from the comforts of my own home!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am with the folks that are voting for men's wear. A trench, a suit jacket, a speedo...something that you can use. It seems a waste of gift fabric to make a one off item.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You are cool Peter!

    I have two suggestions:

    - Back to the Cid Charisse dress
    - A Jeanne Lanvin mother-and-child design for Cathy and Simplicity(Patti Playpal)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Would love to read your article Peter; thanks to you and your love of vintage Singers, I picked up a 1951 Singer 201-2 a couple weeks ago. I couldn't be more thrilled with it! :) Thanks for all the info you post about machines!!

as for MSN, awesome, you deserve it! I'd like to see you sew up the vintage men's swim trunks you've been pinning lately.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Men's capes. Just because I want to make one.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very cool, Peter!

    Selene

    ReplyDelete
  22. Congratulations! Yay! How exciting - you'll be such a fabulous addition to the mix. I second the faux lizard rocker pants! Yessssss!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Cyd Charisse dress- you would have access to all of the right fabrics. It would be fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Classic tailored shirt made of the finest Italian cotton.

I'd love to see you sew more menswear of any type, since I have a husband and two teenage sons I sew for. There's a dearth of information on making men's clothes as compared to women's. I enjoy seeing what men make for themselves or what women make for their men.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Congratulations! I vote that you make something that pushes you out of your style comfort zone but that you think you can make yourself wear regularly. I don't know what that is, so I'm not too helpful, I guess. Anyway, congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Congrats re: the MSN Peter... however, will Cousin Cathy feel spoiled if your make her new items that don;t cost you $4/yard... you don't want to her to get used to plush-er finishes; and encourage any spendthrift ways - she has to set a good example to baby Simplicity :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Congrats on joining the Mood sewing network. I am jealous. I would love to see a tailored project. Maybe a vintage blazer for Cathy. My fingers are crossed for the Vogue magazine. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi! New reader/follower!

I vote for menswear! maybe a nice jacket in bold colors? :D

    And congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Congrats, congrats!!! :) i'd love to see you make clothes for you and Michael with your mood allowance. Most definitely!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Loving the trench idea, but am always on board for rocker pants as well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'll second Carmen Bouchard aka CarmencitaB and request a waistcoat. I'd love to see some detailed tips on fitting men's wear. There's so much out there about fitting women's clothing, but less about getting a nice tailored fit for men. Thanks! Cindy D.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats!
As spring comes it would be great to see coat or pants in vivid colors :0)

    Cheers,
    M

    ReplyDelete
  33. A trench coat! Sew along! I am SO there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Congratulations! I look forward to seeing your first MSN project.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Excellent MSN news, and well-deserved. I'm certainly on the his-and-his rocker pants in lizard; or maybe his-and-hers, a Michael and Cathy photoshoot?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Congratulations, amazing!
I would like to see you make a jumpsuit for Cathy or a dress/skirt with lace. If the jumpsuit is a sew-a-long, I am definitely in...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Go Peter, Go! You will do justice to great fabric. I'd love a sewalong Chanel jacket, a tailored jacket or a trench. But I already have the fabric for snakeskin rocker pants in the stash;)
    H

    ReplyDelete
  38. Definitely menswear. Maybe something safari-themed. Safari-wear can be a lot of fun when you play with accessories.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Awesome Sauce!! Congrats!
We all know how well you sew for your cousin Cathy, but I would love a few more menswear pieces. And Cathy would look awesome in a 60's Doris Day inspired capri pant and tied at the waist shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  40. how great! it'll be nice to see menswear represented on MSN. i've started sewing for my husband lately, so i would love to see a men's blazer or pants!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congratulations, Peter! I love MSN and you will be a fantastic addition. I would like to see more men's sewing, perhaps a blazer or slacks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Congratulations on another Vogue Patterns article!

I was wondering when Mood would come to its senses. Finally, the wait is over. Now you'll have us all in suspense from month to month.

Now, about what to sew. All I ask is that you walk up and down the aisles at Mood and see which fabrics keep you up at night, wild with inspiration. Sew those.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh hell yeah SO SO happy for you!! I say a ball gown for cousin Cathy and a nice extravagant fabric suits for both of you guys! Cant wait!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I put in my .02 cents for more tailoring and menswear posts...and the cape idea from Philipp sounds good, too. I have some old women's suit patterns of my grandmother's that I'm afraid of starting and you're just the man to take the fear out of making suits! Wait-did you ever finish that suit you were going to make?

    ReplyDelete
  45. What about a dapper men's jacket in plush burgundy velvet and contrasting lappel... Or a nerdy tweed jacket... Can you sense I would love to see you make a jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  46. How about a 1900's evening frock?

    ReplyDelete
  47. My picks would be definitely something for you and Michael first. Then maybe a nice tailored suit for Cathy with a nice blouse or a spring cocktail dress. However, I think I would prefer to see something for men. A jacket and pants that go together. I loved those blue printed pants you made.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Congrats on the MSN thing! I think you should sew some menswear - focus on men who sew for men, I think.

I'd love to enter- if you ship overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  49. How about sewing a vintage Chanel-esque suit for Cathy?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think Cathy desperately needs silk satin pajamas with contrast piping, unless you think you might need an equally elegant and liquid smoking jacket.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Fantastic! Make your bathing suits! (There's probably some terrific fabric in there for them.) And some menswear. Your shirts are really great, and it's something different. Best of luck to you!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Easy. The Cid Charisse dress. With this rain I need fancy dresses and sparkle ;)
I know Cathy needs it too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Congratulations on your article and becoming a part of Mood's Sewing Network. Wouldn't Cathy be just stunning recreating some historical events: Sacagawea meeting Lewis and Clark. Or, Amelia Earhart before she flew over the Atlantic or, maybe Leona Hensley throwing her employees to the wolves! Come on! There are some great history there in your own back yard that Cathy (and you) could recreate in costume.

    ReplyDelete
  54. OMG! That's wonderful - to be honest, I was surprised that you weren't in the MSN from the start. What should you sew? Two words: Mermaid Parade.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Congratulations! That's SO exciting. I would kill to be part of their sewing network since I normally can't afford nice fabrics. I'll just keep dreaming.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Congratulations on becoming a "Moody".

I like the idea of silk pj's for Cathy and maybe some for you guys too! Everyone like sleeping in silk!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I would LOVE to see you sewing a Wonder Woman costume for Cathy!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was thinking Cathy would like a gorgeous caftan like Liz Taylor wore in the 60s. Very retro fabulous, darling.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's a little offbeat, but perhaps a figure skating outfit in a vintage style. It would be interesting to see the construction with the flesh colour knits they use. I'm sure Cathy could add a little glamour to the figure skating world

    ReplyDelete
  60. I would like to see you make a grey flannel or worsted wool suit, a sweet white shirt with a monogram on the cuff, and a heartbreaking red silk tie and pocket square. For Cathy, I mean... or for you come to think of it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Congratulations!!!

What Id like to see you sew - or even do a sew along - is a tunic with side slits, and a stand up collar..

    something like
    http://www.yarmo.co.uk/acatalog/TU14.JPG

    or

    http://s.shld.net/is/image/Sears/spin_prod_603177101?hei=315&wid=315&op_sharpen=1&resMode=sharp&op_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wow! Cool! Congrats! How about bespoke tailored suit for yourself. I look forward to make it for my man someday, so may be a sew along for the same too!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'll join the pile-on and say I'd love to see that Cyd Charisse dress...I bet you would find all the right fabrics at Mood. Congrats you lucky duck! I'm so happy your sewing will be subsidized!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Congratulations on the article as that is my favorite topic at the moment -vintage machines-I really have the bug bad. If I win please autograph it since you are now a sewing celeb. I vote on the satin vintage pjs for Cathy or a light weight 3/4 coat that is not bulky but lined for you or herself as I need one like that to replace one that was overly loved and the sleeve got a tear. Even if I don't win I will try to pick this copy up someplace as I want to read the article.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I want to see tailored shirts in different styles and fabrics with your own details added--even classics can get very period-specific and I'm sure you will create many many inspiring variations!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Congratulations and well deserved!

So many people have voted for menswear that I feel compelled to mention two sights to look at some really beautiful (and pricey) clothing:
    thearmoury.com
    gentlemensgazette.com
You will find links to information on men's vintage (see the article on President Truman's suits) and other very interesting things too numerous to list. No help with finding patterns and sewing your own, but talk about inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wonderful news about being added to the Mood Sewing Network, Peter! And now that I think about it I'm shocked you weren't asked in the first place. Glad that's all fixed. :)

I'd love to see you make a classic men's trench coat, or something along those lines. It's nice to see menswear represented in the blogosphere!

    -Amanda

  68. Congratz on the Mood opportunity. Would love the mag!!!!!!!!! How about a cocktail dress for Cathy, shorter in front, with a fish-tail in back, and strapless, with a bolero, in taffeta.... Cathie, in Quebec.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Would love to see you make a tailored cape/cloak, I made one last year, that didn't turn out too well. Congrats on the Mood news, I await with interest on what you choose to craft.

  70. How cool, Peter! How about a steampunk outfit?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree with a previous commenter - a bathing suit sewalong! You seem to have lots of knowledge in that area.

    ReplyDelete
  72. A silk or satin pajama ensemble with a luxurious matching robe and hand embroidered initials. Congrats on the Mood appointment.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Congratulations Peter !! I love reading your posts. I think a monogrammed silk or satin smoking type jacket for you and Michael would be fun to sew. I'll go buy that Vogue just in case. I don't want to miss your article. Love sandi

    ReplyDelete
  74. Menswear! We see tons of women's wear, but many of us sew for the guys in our lives also.

    ReplyDelete
  75. How about a menswear sew along. I'd like to be sewing more for myself. Maybe a WWII style British great coat. Something for three seasons up here in Alaska.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Congrats! I must say I would love to see a men's shirt with front vertical darts (I've discussed my mini rant about the lack of modern patterns with that feature but Burda just came out with one) done with something classy from Mood. Seriously, how specific am I? ;)

Consider me entered. I'm ashamed to admit I've never read the magazine. I sew on a budget so magazines aren't usually where my money goes. Alas, the used book store rarely has decent sewing magazines either.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Definitely menswear......but nothing too complicated.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Open to the whole world? Great! You can send the copy straight to Belgium ;)

    ReplyDelete
  79. How about a tweed shooting outfit complete with deerstalker hat, waistcoat and monacal, congratulations, well deserved

    ReplyDelete
  80. I would love to see more of your coat/jacket details. Congrats with working with Mood.
Would love to win the mag.
    Mary Kay

  81. I am thrilled you are joining the MSN! Whoo hoo! I think you should sew something you really want to sew. Did you ever find any velveteen that met your expectations?

    ReplyDelete
  82. White. Linen. Suit.

    (pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassseeeee?)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Something retro out of that Vogue issue would be a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Thanks for the giveaway! I would love to see you sew a beautiful retro trench coat. With a few tips along the way for those of us looking to make our trench coats ourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  85. In honor of hid new album, I third the faux-leather skinny rocker pants a'la David Bowie.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I would love to see you do a mens cardigan sew along, or perhaps a hooded sweater? BTW the Jocks and Nerds book is now on my must have list.I'm off to ebay to go searching for a copy...

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm throwing my hat in the Vogue ring, and look forward to your makes.

    ReplyDelete
  88. How about a tailored shirt out of some nice lightweight a la Vyella wool? Welcome. As a featherweight owner/user can't wait to read the artice.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I would like to see a swimmsuit cover up sewn by you, like http://www.etsy.com/listing/121718597/simplicity-8001-three-arm-armhole-wrap?ref=sr_gallery_28&ga_search_query=cover+up+pattern&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=all.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'd love a vintage swimsuit sewalong! It would be so cool to do it together!
Congratulations on MSN! You totally deserve this!

    ReplyDelete
  91. I know Cathy is more of a 40s or 70s girl depending on her mood, but how about a 50s floral party dress like McCalls 9829?

    ReplyDelete
  92. A Mens jacket/blazer -

Classic, tweedy, "soft-tailored", suitable for a sophisticated gentleman's country getaway!

Complete with a matching driving cap.

And sewn entirely on a vintage straight-stitch machine, for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Bolero!
I think, Cathy would look great with a bolero jacket.
    Best regards
    Jens

    ReplyDelete
  94. Congrats on the MSN gig. I would LOVE to see you create 40's inspired sleepwear/loungewear/lingerie using some luxury fabrics for Cathy or for yourself.

    Thanks,
    Bad Nana

    ReplyDelete
  95. Fantastic news!! I am so excited to see what you can create with all the diverse and high quality fabrics that mood has!! I would love to see you make a 40s number out of wool crepe!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Last one in is a rotten egg! I hope that means more people will jump in and I won't be the last. LOL. Lovely finds at the flea market, especially the gorgeous hat. Hope my last minute mojo works for the giveaway . . . it often does when I need parking karma. I really want to read the vintage sewing machine article!

    ReplyDelete
  97. How about a jacket or a coat with some kind of funky sculptural element to really push yourself. I love reading how you tackle challenging features of a garment and work yourself through them.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Something with lace. I've got a few lengths of lace in my stash that I want to do something with. I need t̶o̶ ̶s̶t̶e̶a̶l̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶i̶d̶e̶a̶s some inspiration, though.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'd love to see you tackle a good coat (again)... The resukts are always outstanding!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Congrats!! I'm in for the contest and I'm anxiously awaiting that Cyd Charisse dress for Cathy. My other picks would be a fantastic Vionnet or Schiaparelli inspired gown for her.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I would like to enter--thank you for the opportunity! I think that you should sew a men's coat or jacket, suitable to spring/fall.

    Rose in SV

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hi Peter Congrats on joining the network. How about a trench coat? possibly offer a sewalong.
    cutekipepeo(at)gmail(dot)com

    ReplyDelete
  103. I'm extremely excited at even the PROSPECT of a new sew along, but even just seeing your new creations each month is going to be fabulous.

As for suggestions, I'm all for men's wear. Outerwear (peacoat or trenchcoat), also a sew along for accessories would make my year! I'm thinking gloves, hats, bags, and (dare I say it) shoes???

If you decide that you absolutely must do an outfit for Cathy, I think it would be fun to take this Spring/Summer's "in" colors of mustard yellow and bright blue then apply them to a vintage pattern of your choosing!

I hope every time you leave Mood, you put on your best Tim Gunn impersonation and yell "Thank you Mood." while you're walking out the door. Either that or try giving yourself a P.R. esque time limit one week and yell out the time you have left to yourself.

    Just my thoughts

    ReplyDelete
  104. congratulations! Looking forward to seeing your MSN (and other) makes.
