The Robe Muslin: Who Wore It Best, Me or Mom?

I'll say this for my mother: she's game.

Readers, I've finished the Butterick robe muslin and not only does it fit my mother well, she's going to use it as a cover-up for when she visits and the dogs jump all over her.

Trust me that my mother never sprayed Pledge with such gusto when we were kids.  I think she could definitely be the next Madge the manicurist, Josephine the plumber, or Rosie the waitress.

Anyway, to make the muslin for Butterick 4025, I chose a vintage Seventies sheet I had in my stash.  I used to make shirts with these but I found I hated wearing old cotton/poly bedding.

I'm not in love with the Peter Pan collar, which came out looking a whole lot bigger than it does on the pattern envelope; I'll make it smaller next time.

I only added a few buttons to the muslin, but now that I know my Mom is going to use it, I'll add the rest.  And since the robe fits, I'll buy some terrycloth or quilted cotton and make her a real bathrobe.  It has raglan sleeves, always a nice design element.

Readers, I never thought I'd get so much entertainment from a $1 bathrobe pattern.  Do you ever dress up your parents in silly outfits and take pictures of them?  How about your dogs, cats, or newborns?  It's fun, right?

But seriously, who looks better in the robe muslin?  Me?

Or Sonia?

Have a great day, everybody!

  3. Be sure to reinforce the armpit seam joinings on the raglan, Peter. My mother found out, to her dismay, that if you don't reinforce it, the sleeves rip out, and not necessarily on the seams themselves!

  4. So cute! I love the raglan sleeve. I could almost see this as a coat pattern, in a lightweight wool...

  5. I think this one goes to your mom. I love the robe but I agree the collar should be smaller. What a fabulous muslin...I love when I make a muslin and it is actually wearable.

  6. Oh, Peter, you guys are too cute! I always said that you can understand someone better after you have "met" their parents. Glad you guys had fun with this one.

  7. You look better in the robe, but ONLY when you wear the feathery clown wig.

  9. Peter, that is not a fair question. Love the blue wig on both of you.

  10. Gosh, don't tell your Mom, but your legs are better! I love your Mom, maybe she'll adopt me. I'd move to New York and take her out to coffee and everything . . .

  19. Sorry, Peter, I'm going with Sonia!

I've offered to dress my children up in silly outfits, but they're in their 20s now, so it's a no go... I do have a dog that would be game though... hmmm...

  20. You guys look like you had so much fun with this robe! Your mom is adorable :)

  21. Madge never used a base coat or top coat, that always worried me.

  22. You both look terrific, and both have a great sense of fun. Bravo on the muslin. Would also like to see Sonia younger. Also interested in adoption. NYC is a hike, but doable. A bit OT, Hubbster went fabric and pattern and notion shopping to lift my spirits Sat. This is charity shop shopping. One very nice vintage Vogue seemed a bit "fat". I opened the envelope, and inside was a pristine 1921 McCall's raglan coat pattern, factory folds, never used. Oh, bless. made my day. Cathie, in Quebec.

  25. The pure unadultered glee that your mother wears this with makes her the stand-out! There are many current fashion models that could learn from her :-)
Does she tackle all housework this happy?

  26. I'm afraid your mum wins hands down in today's cuteness comp! The robe is lovely (with, as you noted, the easily -fixed exception of the large collar). I particularly like that it's not over-large in the body, which many robe patterns seem to be (though of course you may well have done some clever reducing there.) When you want a little something to whip up fast, those straight seams on raglan sleeves are such a boon- no easing and fretting about the intersecting seams at the underarm.

  27. As a matter of fact I have never dressed my parents up in silly costumes, or even my pets! babies yes. I can see I have definitely missed out! Somehow the feather cap brings out the similarities between the two of you! I'm guessing she has a sense of humor just like yours!!

  28. Here's a toast to free spirits, and the boundless joy that they share just by being themselves.

  29. I love your Mum. She's adorable and the colours are great on her.
    Go Mum:)

  30. I vote for Mom! But you are cute, too, Peter. Apple doesn't fall far from tree -- as is obvious from the "double the fun" photos here.

  31. It's a tie, and I hope you pick your favorite shot of each of you in this outfit and frame them together.

  32. Sonia. Great shots. ParisGrrrl is right - frame them together and give the result to your mum for mothers day. It'll be a gift, so she'll have to display it.

  33. It is a close run thing but I think probably your mum wins. I actually like the big collar................. the back hangs beautifully.....thanks for all the photos.

  34. With gloves on, I must say that your mom looked like 'mom' and you looked more like a very cute adorable janitor...LOL

  35. Too much cuteness for one post!! Thanks for the smiles. I think your mom wins, but it's a pretty tight race.

  36. Your Mom is adorable! You're cute too, Peter, but Mom wins this one!

  37. Peter, sorry, but your mom is cute as a bug's ear! I love the robe, it has that duster look that I wish would come back!

  38. I love this foto session! Both look great and cute!

My mom has also a "clown personality" and love to play the model.

I can't wait to see the final resut of the robe!

  39. I gotta go with your mom on this one, but boy, what a close race....

  41. Illustrated pattern fronts vs. a photograph. Photograph wins it for me. Less chance of getting an oversized Peter Pan collar.

  42. Isn't it funny? It's just like the concept of buying your dog a fancy toy and she just wants to play with a lid or a stick.

  43. I have to go with mom

  44. Definitely mom. Love the photo shoot though.

  47. Asking which of you looks better is like asking a parent to choose their cutest child. You are both adorable. Your mom is a great sport! I’ve never seen anyone have so much fun from a robe or sewing project.
