Cathy models the One Pattern Wardrobe!

Friends, the stars were aligned yesterday.  The weather was perfect, Cathy awoke with less eye puffiness than usual, and knee socks were in abundance at my local Duane-Reade drugstore!  (Worn over tights, they cleverly combine chic and warmth.)

I hope you'll agree that Cathy looks fetching in this photoshoot.  Whatever cost incurred to my vision in making these houndstooth mix-n-match separates -- tunic top, hot pants, jacket, and long pants -- it was worth it!

So here it is:

As always, to see these photos full-size, please click on any image and then, in Picasa, choose "View All" in the upper left hand corner, and "Slideshow."

I know this shoot will result in many hundreds of you scouring your local fabric stores for oversized houndstooth.  Before you do, please take a day or two to think about it.  Consider the cost to 1) your eyesight, and 2) your reputation.  Remember: bold prints require a certain something extra that many of us non-models lack.  (Maybe it's chutzpah.)

If in doubt, send pictures to Cathy before wearing.

For those interested in more garment construction photos, you'll find them here.

In closing, refined readers, what do you think?  Cathy vs. the houndstooth: who's wearing whom?

Enjoy!

  1. Cathy, I love the Sixties Swinger, the black knee socks and white Jackie O's just knock my socks off! At 5' tall, women like me need you to carry the houndstooth torch. Go forwardly boldy to where no man has gone before.

  2. If Cathy has the legs, she really should flaunt them. I wish I had Cathy's legs.

  3. Why must we choose -- I love both looks. And what a splendid day as backdrop. I'll be voting for this one pattern wardrobe! BRAVO!

  4. I agree, I love the Sixties Swinger look. The knee socks are just perfect. I can't wait to cast my vote at PR!

  5. Definitely love the first look and, in particular, picture #6. Such attitude, it's great. The second look falls a little flat for me - too much of the b&w houndstooth.

I happen to have an oversized houndstooth wool. I purchased it pre-Mondo. Haven't found the right pattern yet, but I sure can't rock the head to toe houndstooth look that Cathy can. :)

  6. I love both looks, I really can't pick a favorite. I love how the tunic when paired with the bigger houndstooth jacket reads like a solid, and I love the kicky feel of the hot pants. You worked this wardrobe pattern right Peter, as did Cathy.

  7. Love both too, but the sixties swinger takes it by a nose. The pictures are great.

  8. I'd say sixties swinger by a nose too. But the entire point of these one-pattern things is that she doesn't have to choose! Do both, that's best, uni-dimensional personalities are so boring...

  9. I prefer smart woman about town! Another great outfit, photo shoot, and story (love Tito too!)

For those who want to challenge themselves, Joann's has gigantic houndstooth in both knit and woven in/near their "British Frenzy" collection.

  10. Wait! The black and white houndstooth is a double-knit?!? I'm speechless (or is that "touchless", since I'm on a keyboard???)

And what IS Tito wearing??? Is that houndstooth on the side of his leg???? Or just a mini-check wanna-be???

  11. Cathy's hair is FAB! And I cannot choose between those two looks. Each is fantastic.

  13. thanks! i love how you put the whole slideshow together, I hope it was as entertaining for Cathy as it is for us (and I can speak for all, yes) to watch... plus there are quite a few pieces in that wardrobe, I hope I had your rate of productivity:)) and one pattern wardrobe is a great idea, sure, any pattern:)

  14. Wow! Cathy looks fabulous! I agree that 60's swinger wins by a nose. I wish I could wear knee socks so well.

  15. I think that Cathy can really carry the houndstooth look - and it is a lot of look! Love the whole one pattern wardrobe but I particularly adore that jacket - you've got me wanting a houndstooth jacket now but I'm not sure my eyes or sewing skills are up to the challenge. You have done a great job. Also, I have to mention that I am delighted to hear that Duane-Reade is now THE place to shop for those high-fashion accessories that every girl needs to complement her outfit.

  16. I dig the hot pants look as the full houndstooth pantsuit is causing me to experience vivid after-images whenever I look at blank walls.

  17. The swinger look wins my vote, if only because the full-on houndstooth suit was blinding.

The "ad copy" was delightfully authentic--- and seeing Cathy with Tito was PRICELESS.

  18. whoaaaa, I thought you said you didn't have that special *thing* for fashion? Clearly, you DO. I mean, I confess, I didn't "get it" when I saw this project in process. (Because I am fashion-challenged, for real)
But now, you pop out with this blog post that's all high fashion and everything. I guess Cathy is a powerful muse for you.
    She seems quite a fun-loving gal :)

  19. I really like the swinging 60's look! But Cathy, I've seen you in pictures reading a plumbing manual, and now the SPORTS PAGE? Ack!!!

  20. All that houndstooth together sort of neutralises it. It seems easier to wear this way that one coat with, say, a lot of solid black. Or maybe its just Cathy's gorgeousness - she shines in an outfit that would overwhelm the rest of us. Good luck for the contest!

  21. I love the smart woman about town look, but I'm a boring accountant, so not sure I have the nerve to pull off that look...kudos to Cathy!!

  22. Oh wow, I love the Sixties Swinger look! Fantastic outfits and I love the photo shoot, Cathy really works it for the camera!! :)

  23. Woman about town! Definitely! Who knew so much houndstooth (even the word sounds awful) could look so stunning. Well done, Peter! Cathy looked fab.

  24. I love this wardrobe and I want it for myself!

  25. I love the way Cathy styled this & the black, white and red. Cathy has the aplomb to carry off what I could not. Kudos. :-)

  26. Fabulous! I love both looks. It's the perfect wardrobe for a weekend away!

  27. Actually I love the full B&W jacket and pants ensemble, with the jacket done up. Cathy has the slender elegance to carry it off. The tunic and hotpants with belt are awesome too... and the ingenious knee socks over tights. Oh, I wish I had Cathy's legs, too. That outfit on me would look like a handbag sitting on two tree stumps. Some of us have it, and some of us don't. It is obvious (in many ways) that Tito is a man of taste.

  28. I loved the short outfit with the jacket. I think it would've looked much better with some cool long boots, instead of the socks, though.
    Really nice!

  29. Cathy is such a hoot! She looks smart about town in any outfit. Isn't it 90% attitude anyway? Since YOU asked, I love the elegant set with the belted tunic. And Tito...well, I'd be a tad worried about what the steroids could be doing to that package of his. You can only pet a chest for so long!

  30. I have loved houndstooth since hot pink and black print was popular in the eighties. I think Cathy look fabulous in everything. Her hot pants has given me ideas about a print I made (my first on Spoonflower). http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/393346 It was meant to be something else but now I go for hot pants...

  31. Oh Cathy, you make me want to dig out my Petula Clark 45's and have a dance party in my bedroom! (Tito can come too)

  32. I love Cathy's new Mod look and her long hair, I suppose because I would like to look just like her!

I'm not as fond of the pants as I thought I would be. I think a short or pencil skirt with that fabric would have been fab!

  33. Cathy has got it going on!!! Yeah baby!!!

  34. giant houndstooth made a fantastic coat and would make an adorable skirt or dress too. i admit i'm not yet sold on the giant pants but if i found some GH knit for cheap, i'd grab up a bunch. well done! can't wait to see the other wardrobes.

  35. Holy smokes! Cathy looks amazing! I love that giant houndstooth fabric and both looks are incredible. Tell Cathy that the long hair is just perfect. And those LEGS go on for days! Love, love, love it!

  36. Fetching indeed! Cathy looks stellar in these ensembles. The looks with the shorts (or romper?) are by far my faves. And not just because of Tito.

    ReplyDelete
  37. lol Cathy is by far the hippest, most far out swingin' kind of gal!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I prefer 60s swinger on Cathy; it makes her look fun and sassy. I really enjoyed the slide show.

  39. Swing it sister!!!

By the way, so happy to have found this blog, your entries have just entertained my procrastinating self for hours...
