Fantastic thrift store finds!

In addition to sewing up a storm during a storm, I also found some great things at the Salvation Army this week that I have to share with you.

First, I found some fun fabric.  How about this piece of faux tiger?  It's less than a yard, but about 64 inches wide.  A stole for Cathy...a vest for me...?

Ideas, people, I need ideas!

From new fabric!

Then there's this large Vera cotton print table cloth.  Yoga pants perhaps?  A summer blazer?

From new fabric!

I also found fabulous dead stock hosiery, which is always fun -- and practical.  Any idea why this woman is standing in a shelfless brass etagere with a plastic geranium?

And who doesn't love hot pink thigh-high fishnets?

But best of all are the HATS I found, many wonderful hats for $2.99 each!

I think THIS is my favorite:

There are too many hat pics to post here, so check out my (ever-growing) Picasa hat gallery.

Finally, I received this nifty vintage pattern in the mail. I got it because it reminds me of Doris Day in "Teachers Pet."  Plus that prophecy stamped right on the front was so...uplifting.

I can see I have a lot of sewing to do -- but then again, it IS Friday.  Where do I begin?

Where would you begin?

  1. I like the idea of a summer jacket w/ the tablecloth... Have fun!

  2. Pink fishnet thigh-highs. They're "smart AND fashionable". I think that pretty much says it all.

tablecloth: very jealous, don't care what you make. hmmph.

Faux fur: vest. ala 1980's hairband. must get wig. or grow very long hair very quickly. add spandex glitter pants. ROCK ON!

  3. With the faux tiger: Cathy needs a muff and a matching pill box hat - something that is worn on the front of the head, tilted a little bit. But DEFINITELY a muff.

  4. OK, so we have:

    Muff/Pillbox combo: 1

    Vest: 1

    Tablecloth jacket: 1

    Keep it coming!

  6. Love your new Butterick (Butter?) pattern with the prophecy! :-P

  7. Doris wannabe looks like she's in the throes of some kind of rapture anyway...

I vote for something from the linen, but do you have enough for a jacket?

  8. I vote for the muff and pillbox hat - grrrrrrrr wonderful! And who doesn't love pink fishnet hose? Always in style. I love the hats! Your Salvation Army has better stuff than ours.

  9. OK, P, I'm going to take that as a vote for a jacket which, sadly, I don't think I have enough fabric for. So that puts us at:

    Muff/Pillbox combo: 2

    Faux fur vest: 1

    Tablecloth jacket: 2

    How about those hats, huh?

  10. Perhaps Freddy and Willy need tiger coats and Cathy needs a turban and gloves with tiger trim?

  11. I vote for a faux fur vest for Cathy....very IN... Then again, the pill box and muff sound fantastic and I would like to see your rendition of that. Love checking in here...Cheers me up!

  12. Dude. Hats are hats. Hats are always fabulous (unless they are giant plush Dr. Seuss hats, I mean we really don't need to go there right?).

But come on. Has NO ONE commented on the FABULOUS coat closure that Ginger is sporting? I mean, what is that thing? Is it really holding her coat closed or it is decorative or... what? WHAT IS THAT?? It is totally amazing!

(I like that thing. You might have noticed.)

  13. I haven't seen that Doris Day movie in forever and I do remember loving it as a kid. That fedora is very chic on you.

  14. Great movie, too. I like the first hat, the fedora. Now you need a zoot suit to match those undies you made! For the tiger piece, a vest could be neat. Fun stuff, Peter. I have no idea what I am working on now, I get so little time to really concentrate...

  15. For the faux tiger, I am imagining a Christmas green 1950s style coat, with a big tiger collar and big tiger cuffs. Any tiger fur left over needs to be fashioned into headwear. Divalicious.

  16. Hey, Chinese New Year begins tomorrow and it's Year of the Tiger - so, very timely fabric choice. I like the hat/muff combo idea too.
And I seriously covet that Butterick pattern, prophecy and all. I'd thumb-wrestle you for it!

  17. How about when I'm done with it, I send it along to you!

  18. There's a BWOF pattern from about two years ago for a short capelet thingy that I think would be perfect for the faux fur. I'd make Cathy a circle skirt for summer with a nice little short sleeved blouse in either white or the taupey colour in the fabric. You know the 50's type with the collar that turns up at the back. A pair of lovely blue ballet flats, a neat little purse and a pair of crisp white gloves. Oh and maybe one of the straw hats with a band made from leftover fabric from the skirt?
