When movie fashion shows go TERRIBLY TERRIBLY WRONG

From the incomparable "Back Street," starring Susan Hayward. Gowns by Jean Louis. TRIVIA QUIZ: Can you name the seated dowager in the lavender cocktail ensemble?

BEST LINES:

HE: "Get out of that car or there'll be a scene you'll never forget -- right here!"

SHE: "Sounds fascinating! Give me a raincheck."

  1. Ah! What happens? Were they killed?!?!?!? I LOVE old movies - I used to watch them with my mom ALL the time. She had a wonderful collection of videos... I'm gonna go update my Netflix queue now! Thanks for the great clip! PS - WHHHOOO is that woman in the lavendar? - She looks so familiar, but I just can't remember who she is!

  3. Wow. "I'm going where you'll never find me." Deathless prose, that.

  4. Eruditeslacker, you've one a lovely Hamilton Beach electric can opener.

If you'd have said Natalie Schafer we'd have thrown in a deluxe Smith-Corona manual typewriter. Sorry.

  5. Interesting thing about John Gavin was that he was one of those early Hispanic/Latino American ethnic actors (Mexican and California Spanish) who father changed his name from Golenor to Gavin to fit in to a white American society at the time. (Think Anthony Quinn.) Glad times have changed. John Gaven later became ambassador to Mexico under Reagan's administration.

  6. Now that's some interesting trivia, Lozzen.

Of course, as an actor, he was really just a Rock Hudson clone...

  7. Yes, a Rock Hudson clone I know but I see I did not win one of those enviable Sunbeam toasters. =D

And I recognized both Lovey and Lucy, but dammit, I wasn't fast enough! Maybe next time!

  10. This was my favorite movie growing up! I used to peruse the TV guide (these were pre video/dvd days) to catch it whenever it aired. What a tear-jerker!

  11. OOps, glad I was late to this one 'cause I was gonna guess Lee Patrick (Cosmo Topper's wife). I wouldn't've wanted to get hit by that typewriter! haha

  12. Weren't Rock Hudson and John Gavin both discovered by Henry Willson, along with most of the other movie hunks of that era? If I recall correctly they were, so that might explain the similarity. He discovered more Hollywood talent that almost any other agent back in the day...

  13. Bryan, I think you're right. It's uncanny that John Gavin has the EXACT SAME VOICE as Rock Hudson, isn't it?
