Heavy into Vogue 7739

Remember that pattern I mentioned last Saturday?  Well, I decided to tackle it today!

I've had a few problems along the way.  The sleeves are supposed to be eased in, creating a lot of gathers that, on this fantastic metallic copper, fabric are highly visible and compete with the neckline.  I want the sleeves to be completely smooth at the cap, or certainly not visibly gathered, and since this is a very stretchy polyester lycra fabric, I think that should be fine: there's really no need for all that extra ease.

So I'll probably have to cut down the cap so it's not so high; still figuring out the best way to do that without simply eyeballing it, which is generally the way I work.

Here's the neckline before I attached the collar.  Pretty neat, huh?  Those gathers were easy to do and I love the way they look.

This project has gone pretty fast.  Since the fabric is stretchy and the top is basically like a loose turtleneck shirt, I decided not to use a zipper but rather just pull it over my head.  As you can imagine, that made the whole process a lot easier.

I hope to finish this up later today or tomorrow.  I'll keep you posted!

  3. Pretty! I like the gathers at the neck... What happened to the pretty purple fabric from your other post?

  4. Yum! I love the shiny. And as for the sleeve cap, just measure the armscye between the ease notches and cut down your cap height until the sleeve (between the notches) matches the hole. Also, a sleeve head is usually more carved out in the front than in the back. I can't believe you've only been sewing since..June? You rock.

  5. Thanks, all. Marybeth, that purple fabric was shedding glitter all over the apartment! I'll use that for something else -- I have 5 1/2 yards, for Pete's sake!

  10. I like that...but I can't really wear high-necked garments, unfortunately. I am a 36D and turtlenecks make me look like one big tit.
