Peter Models the Plaid Overcoat!
My coat is finished! You can see me model it here.
I'm very happy with the way this coat turned out and the timing is ideal since the weather is rapidly turning cooler.
Hey -- do you ever find that your fabric looks better as a garment than it did as mere flat yardage? I sat on this plaid (not literally of course) waiting to feel inspired for a long time; I couldn't quite picture how it would look sewn up. Finally, I just decided to go for it.
I'm so glad I did: I'm ready to paint the town plaid!
A special thanks to my generic straight-stitch walking foot (which you can see me use here on my Singer 201) -- which helped keep those plaid seams in line. I couldn't have managed as well without it.
Have a great day, everybody!
Just wondering which generic walking foot did you use? I've got a generic one that only works so-so and would love to figure out where to get one that work.
ReplyDeleteI picked mine up on eBay a few years ago -- there's no serial number on it or anything. It's for straight stitch only.
DeleteLove your coat! And to think you used to have someone else do your buttonholes!
ReplyDeleteNice coat, Peter. It looks versatile (casual/business) and comfortable. I bet it looks great with a suit, too.
ReplyDeleteI've never plaid-matched. How much more fabric is required than the pattern specifies -- depends on the plaid's size? And do you match layers and cut or do you cut each piece singly?
You definitely need more fabric for plaid; how much you need depends on the type of plaid you're dealing with -- some are symmetrical and others are not. I always cut plaid in single layers: it takes just a bit more time but the results are much better.
DeleteGood information. Thank you!
DeleteFabulous! You did a beautiful job on matching your plaid. Very professional looking. It's a great look on you. How's your pattern making class going?
ReplyDeleteGreat! We didn't have class this week on account of the Jewish holiday.
DeleteI love everything about this coat. The one button visible at top is PRIMO.
ReplyDeleteIt's fabulous! And you wear it so well.
ReplyDeleteYou had better be careful and never take it off or someone will steal it! Love the slight chevron in the center back seam!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job. Wonderful welt pockets!
ReplyDeleteLove the coat. Love the plaid. Everything is top notch as usual. And you model it like you were born for editorial.
ReplyDeletevery flattering: colors, cut scale of pattern
ReplyDeleteimpressed by the beautiful button holes and kudos
on scavenging the buttons from the trashed coat
A+
Beautiful work Peter. Perfect for these chilly days we are having right now.
ReplyDeleteI love this coat! All the detail work is amazing. The pockets worked out well.
