What I Did On My Summer Vacation + New Patterns
I'm back from the Cape, readers!
I'm not what you would call a beach person. I like to swim in the ocean and I enjoy a rough surf, but I can't handle the sun, hate applying sunblock, and the sand -- yuck. So even though we had glorious weather, we went to the beach to swim/sun only once. The water was cold and the surf nil. I wore one of my me-made bathing suits.
Still, I ran along the beach (Provincetown is a marvelous place to go running) most mornings and we walked the dogs on the bay daily.
As required, we ate lobster at the famous Lobster Pot restaurant. (Well, I ate lobster, Michael ate sole.) It never disappoints.
We rented what must be the smallest house in Provincetown: literally one room with a bathroom carved out of it. The house looks directly onto the main drag, Commercial Street, so instead of watching TV, we just drew the blinds and watched the world go by.
As I mentioned, we had magnificent weather: sunny skies, low humidity, mid 70's the entire time. If there was (is) a downside to Provincetown, it's the long drive from NYC -- easily 6 hours with no traffic, but there's no alternative if you're traveling with dogs.
As fun as it was, I am always glad to return to my sewing machines. And I have two new patterns on the way I'm excited about.
First, I want to try making one of those 70's style cotton/nylon lined parkas.
I picked up this Daisy Kingdom pattern, which looks like just the thing (I also considered a nearly identical Green Pepper pattern).
And yesterday I won this vintage Don Loper cocktail dress pattern and coat on eBay. I love when a dress pattern includes a coat, don't you? Cathy simply adores Don Loper!
And that's it. I hope you enjoyed your last week of August and are looking forward to the month ahead.
Have a great day, everybody!
I loooove the tiny house! I bet it was so cute and cozy. Glad your homemade trunks got an outing. You can really pull off that style.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely getaway, I hope the dogs loved it. My Maximus the Westies loves road trips.
ReplyDeleteHere is to the end of summer and the start of Fall and sweaters, polar fleece, wool and more interesting clothing options.

Can't wait to see what you are going to do with the Don Loper pattern/fabric you choose ! What a fantastic pattern and what a great win !
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of renting a small house like that on the main strip ! How fantastic... prime patio seating !
OHMYGOSH, every time I hear the name Don Loper, I think of the I Love Lucy show where she wanted the DL dress, couldn't afford it, and made a deal to model in the fashion show in return for the dress. She got sunburned the day before and had a heck of a time "modelling" the dress. I just love watching that show! Welcome home!
ReplyDeletePeter, missed your blog. Really nice family photo of you, Michael, and doggies, sans cat who must have stayed safe at home.
DeleteLinda, that episode was hysterical. Remember the one where Lucy sewed her own dress and gave herself a permanent (no money again)? Occasionally one of the new asymmetrical patterns reminds me of Lucy's dress. All out of kilter. She also cut out the dress on the floor and cut the carpet along with the pattern..
...and the Jacques Marcel Paris burlap couture.
DeleteMy mom made one of those parkas from a kit in the late 70s. The marriage dissolved but the parka has been worn by both mom and dad. I say make one. I'm pretty sure a lllll the cool kids (who couldn't identify an original if they saw it) will be trying to get one this fall.
ReplyDeletePeter, I am SO glad you will be back and blogging. You were missed but thanks for the photos. Love the one of you in the window watching people watching you.
ReplyDeleteI'm green - we didn't make it to the Cape this summer, and we miss our fix of the Lobster Pot (once upon a time we got a pair of 6-pounders - the whole room went silent as they were carried in). I've always noticed that little place as we walked by - not terribly private, but as you note, a great passing show.
ReplyDeleteNow - before the fall gets too far gone, don't you have one other dress you really ought to try out?
How could I forget? ;)
DeleteYour swim trunks came out really nice! I can tell your two had the perfect vacation!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! How nice that you took your little doggies with you. Love that parka pattern. I look forward to seeing your version.
ReplyDeleteYayyy, you're back! I missed you, glad you had a good time"
ReplyDeleteMissed your blog. Hope you had a wonderful vacation. Looks like it was. Lovely pics. How often did you think of your machines?
ReplyDeleteAh, that parka. I made a similar Frostline one in the 70's for my then boyfriend, and I understand his brother still wears it (he doesn't care who made it). What sells it is the lining - don't be shy about contrast (and why would you?).
ReplyDeleteOh, how I miss Frostline kits!
DeleteI had never heard of those before -- interesting!
DeleteYou all look happy and rested, sounds like a wonderful end of summer!
ReplyDeletePeter, I missed you too! I made three of those Frostline kits in the 70's too. I still remember that they were in brown, navy, and red. The fabric was a nylon and I believe that you held the edge of the fabric over a match so that it would lightly "melt" and secure the edges. All three parkas still exist as Frostline put quality material in their kits
ReplyDeletePeter, add me to the list of those who missed you.
ReplyDeleteI was in P-Town last week. The weather (86F and disgustingly humid) wasn't as pleasant as when you were there. Absolutely lovely place.
I'm looking forward to seeing the parka. I never thought of that style as seventies, but, now that you mention it...
As a wife and mother, I dream of a tiny house like that, but it would be just me and my sewing machine. My husband and son could stop by...if they bring me take-out.
ReplyDeleteSounds ideal!
DeleteLook at that intense gaze Micheal has in that photo. What a romantic little spot!
ReplyDeleteI'm from MA and never made it to Provincetown :( we only go up to Yarmouth ,is also very nice place. The water is very warm on the other side, in Dennis.
ReplyDeleteLove the cocktail dress!
Glad you're back! Why do Michael's eyes always 'pop'. He really knows how to dress to bring out his coloring...or is it your cousin helping him out :)
ReplyDeleteCant wait to see the parka!---Barrie
