FINAL Williwear Post: Michael Rocks It!

OK, so Michael insisted he get to model McCalls 8536, the vintage Eighties Willwear top.  Or somebody insisted...

I think it looks great on him.  Something about the camo shorts and the black glasses balances the Dorothy Zbornak vibe, don't you agree?

Fabric this treacly benefits from a bit of an edge.

Even with dark shorts, on me it's dated looking and, as one of you pointed out, my neck may be too long for the no-collar thing.  I look bird-like.

On Mary Porter, well -- it's not a fair comparison.

What do you think, readers?  I'm out of the "who wore it best" running, but how about between Mary and Michael?

I think it's time to put this garment behind me and move on.  I may -- may -- attempt this one more time this summer, perhaps narrowing the torso, raising the armhole, and using a less dated-looking fabric.

But is it worth the trouble?

Have a great day, everybody!

  1. Miss Porter did win this one... Even though Michael did some great poses!

  2. That is definitely Michael's shirt! The color and style looks great on him.

  3. Give it to Mary. It definitely is more her style, but then she has layered it with a collared shirt.

  4. I love it on all of you. It's terrifically chic.

  5. Congratulations Miss Mary for rocking the shirt; she hit the nail perfectly on the head by teaming it with a collared shirt *high five*

  6. Michael rocked it. I'm sorry for Miss Mary, but Michael looks the best!

  7. Michael looks amazing in that shirt!

  8. Oh No, Michael wins for sure!!! Miss Mary is by far the most adorable but she only pulls it off because of the collared shirt underneath. Michael is definitely the cutest with the no collar pastel look. I love that stripey fabric by the way....

  9. Thank you for rescuing Ms. Porter from the cutting table at JoAnns, where she's been terrorizing me.

    1. I think she's been ahead of me in line for the last six times I've visited there, too.

  10. Definitely Michael! The colors in the shirt go well with his skin tone.

  11. That shirt has a whole different vibe on Michael. Looks great. It also look good paired with shorts like your wearing it. Mary wears it charmingly ( a little jewelery goes a long way) four words of advice......ac-cess-or-ize. Is Mary holding a loaf of freshly baked ham? I think that shirt would be splendid in gauze. xoxooxx

  12. I give the tiara, scepter, sash, and bouquet to Michael, although I have to admire the plucky Ms. Porter's backstage attempt to abscond with same. (Glad the fire escape siren is in working order.)

  13. You really liked the pockets hidden in the yoke seam. I'd say take that feature and apply it to another shirt pattern. Updating the entire pattern would require more of an overhaul than it's likely worth. However, I wouldn't apply that pocket feature to a fitted shirt--I think it does require a looser fit to work.

As for the no-collar style, I agree that it doesn't really suit you--it was better on Michael. The pastels aren't bad on Michael, but I think in a different fabric he could really rock that shirt.

As for who wore it best? I'd say Mary, hands down.

  14. I say Michael wore it best! I love the designer Willi. He died before his time. I love unusual shirt designs. Holley in Roseville Mn

  15. Looks great on Michael. I love the pants who wears with it. Nice contrast.

  16. I think Michael still has it! But Mary is sure working it with the beads!

  17. Michael all the way. He owns that shirt!

  18. gee, i think Michael looks great in it. i know it's the same shirt, but it really reads menswear on Michael....Ms. Porter is a close second though. I think it just might be the wrong colorway for you...I like the shirt style on you, just not those pastels

  19. I think Michael wins. I find it interesting how different it looks on different people.

  20. When are you going to make the padded shoulder blazer?

  21. I think it looks fabulous on Michael! It does look different on each person; I say Michael wears it best.

  24. Michael, the colors look good on him

  25. Oh Peter, you DESERVE a new shirt too. You could try McCall's 2379 for a similar look but with a collar! Though Michael looks wonderful in pastels, you, on the other hand, look best in bolder colors <--just my opinion and worth what you paid for it.

  26. Michael wins, totally suits him!

  27. FINAL willi-wear post?! Say it isn't so! You've done so much with it already. I wish I had the fashion sense to say why, but it does look better on Michael and Mary. I think it's something to do with proportions and color. You may want to try a hemp belt with it. Go for an island vibe.

  28. Peter you would look good in this shirt but not in those colours.

  29. Michael looks best. I don't think the colours work for you, I think the style might be okay in a different colourway. I'm not sure Miss Mary would suit without the collar underneath. I like the shirt.

  30. I think Miss Potter had an unfair advantage in the tailor's ham prop. Therefore I cast my vote for Michael. Proffering a tailor ham will always make anyone look better in an outfit. It's akin to blood doping in The Tour de France.

  31. Mary cheated by wearing a collared shirt underneath, so Michael wins

  32. I love it on Michael. He's got that dark coloring like my husband. He can wear a beautiful pastel yellow and look so cool and crisp. Me, I'm simply too pale and end up looking sickly. I think that shirt made up in a nice dark blue chambray would look great on you and be a wonderful transition piece to fall. Just my too cents.
