Sonia (Mom) Models the Completed Pique Robe!

I FINALLY finished my mother's cotton pique robe!

The fabric was from a winter sale at Paron's; very thick and soft.

I'd rate the experience of sewing this robe somewhere between "deadly dull" and "stultifying."  That's why it took me a month to complete.  But I knew I'd be seeing my mother today -- her birthday -- and I wanted to be able to give it to her.

She liked it.  (And it fit her nicely.)

Naturally I'd tried it on too.

She arrived carrying a linen top she'd picked up at Marshall's that needed shortening.  I think her exact words were, "You have to alter this top I bought."  (Oh, do I?, I thought but didn't say.)

The top was pretty but way too long for a shrinking petite.  I took off 3".

These are the "after" shots -- the "before" was similar, just 3" longer.

Alterations are truly tedious.

I also took her out to lunch and then shopping at Whole Foods.  I think I fulfilled my filial duty.

And now it's nap time.

Have a great day, everybody!

  3. Why am I not surprised your mom is as cute as a button? Happy b-day to her. And you've got a Phyllis Diller vibe going on with the robe. Well done!

    1. It's Butterick 4025 -- must be from the early 1980's. (I changed the pockets and the collar.)

  11. I think the fabric is German towel fabric "would you believe it?) Perfect for robes, very comfortable and great when you get out of the shower. Well done!

  12. Your mom just gets cuter and cuter - I love how she embraces the modelling (could she be persuaded to do a Cathy style photo story shoot? That would be awesome!). The robe looks great - you both wear it very well.

  13. Do you work? I'm interested because I work only part-time & struggle to find the time to sew much at all, whereas you sew heaps.

  15. I'm glad that your mom is happy but I also preferred the flower one.

Just wanted to say that I love your blog. Another thing I love is Flatness folded, what an amazing book. Thank you for the recommendation.

  18. "Alterations are truly tedious." True, but look how cute she looks in her new shirt! And a hem is quicker than the whole thing. (Must go tell myself that about the skirt I need to hem....

  19. You both look terrific in Mom's new robe, but how happy her face looks!

Alterations are tedious in one sense, but I look at it this way-- you transform something unwearable into something attractive and it takes almost no time at all. It's pretty high yield activity for very little time investment.

  21. The pique robe is nice and your mom looks very happy with it, but, I think she missed a bet when she turned down the flower-power robe. Well...all's well that ends well.
