Weekend Update!

Readers, I've been very busy of late, but I did want to check in and keep you up to date.

I've been sewing up a storm.  I am happy to report that my March Mood project is completed and photographed (yay, high 50's!).  If all goes as planned it should debut on Monday.  I just know you're going to love it -- and hate it.  Hopefully more the former than the latter.

I may have mentioned that this month we were asked to pick a Spring/Summer 2014 runway look for inspiration.  My look(s) included a lot of pattern mixing and a skirt.  I don't know how it's going to play in Peoria, but today in Chelsea it got a whole bunch of stares.  Just our luck, on our way out to take our photo shoot, the elevator was full of pubescent boys -- exactly the audience you want when you're in gender-discordant, avant-garde, Japanese-inspired attire.  In truth, Michael and I giggled more than they did -- out of excruciating discomfort.  It felt like a long ride.

In other news, this morning I was fortunate to be able to hang out for a few hours with lovely Lauren, who's visiting NYC this weekend.  I wasn't able to participate in the big fabric-shopping meet-up held in her honor this afternoon (I had to rush home and make buttonholes), but I'm sure there will be plenty of posts about who bought what.  I can hardly wait to read the guilty confessions.

I hope I'm not giving too much away when I say that Lauren's hair is now a vivid peacock blue.  I love it.

I also got to see some other old friends and make some new ones too.  I can't for the life of me figure out how it is that home sewers are so consistently nice -- I mean, really, have you ever met anyone who was a total be-atch?  (If so, don't name names, please.)  Maybe this is a topic for a future blog post.

Oona and Leatrice

Amanda, Lisette, and Jennifer

Amity, Wannett, and Kelli

Kelli and yours truly

Michael and I were both pooped this evening so we ordered pizza in.  Why is pizza is so consistently delicious?  It must have something to do with the combination of salty, sweet, and very greasy.  Plus carbs.  Yum!

Friends, it's time for a beauty bath and then I'm off to bed.

Have a great day, everybody!  (And seriously, aren't sewers unusually nice?)

  1. In the same way I've never had a good cup of coffee in NYC, I've never had a bad piece of pizza! :-)

  2. they are nice and have lots of positive energy. Mostly I am a doll maker and have been to doll making conferences and everybody had fun and everybody was nice to each other.

  3. Sounds like a fun get together. I finished my Mood project today, three pieces that are suppose to go together but look better separately! I like your story about the elevator

  4. I think we are a nice lot. Home sewers are creative and interested in others' creativity. There is a lot to share and be happy about in the sewing community.

  5. Looking at the photos, they're not just unusually nice, they're also unusually attractive.

  6. Cannot wait to see your skirt! Sad you didn't make it to the fabric-shopping portion of the day. Apparently we were dressed to match -- I wore my Home Sewing Is Easy dress. ;)

  7. I think the sewers that connect on the internet often do so to 1) help share what they have learned 2)thank someone else for what they have taught or 3) praise someone else's fine efforts. Selfish and mean people wouldn't bother to do any of those 3 things, so the ones who do come from the nice pool of sewers.

    1. that is an EXCELLENT point. and luckily it also means the nice pool doesn't experience much else!

  9. Without exception every sewer I have ever encountered (in real life or on the internet) has been really, really nice.

Looking forward to the upcoming Big Reveals.

  10. Have to agree with Anonymous I. Its the pool you're drawing from. I work in a big-box retail sewing store, and it ain't the same out there.
You'd also be inclined to think only large little old ladies quilt and that's so not true either.

You probably gave those kids something to talk about all day long!

  11. Yes I have. A quilter. I won't give names.

  12. i'm rabid to see this next outfit. i'm you're biggest fangirl on your current trend....

and pizza is the perfect food. what other food can incorporate all four food groups in such spectacularly unhealthy fashion?

  13. Lovely fabrics. Exciting to see what you will create. I just finished making placements, individual cutlery holders and napkins for my spring lunch. Next I will be making European style pillow cases, an idea I saw on Pinterest for pocket storage for a mattress, vintage aprons and birthday cards (no sewing). So I thought I would take a note out of your book and get sewing.

  15. So great to see so many familiar faces together! I agree, sewers really are the nicest! Can't wait to see your finished project!

  16. A man whose intelligence I respect and who participated in Ren-faire-type events said to me once that if a man was looking for intelligent women, that he would find them in the SEWING CIRCLES.

Oh and Peter, I will be sending out your MOP shirt buttons as soon as I get to the post office. Probably tomorrow!

  17. I've never met a mean sewer but I've met my share of really weird ones. I think the creative factor in sewing brings them out. And I don't mean adorably kooky, I mean the kind who are plain strange.
I think in general people who put a lot of time into making things can't then turn around and be destructive, negative people.

  18. I guess I'm the exception that proves the rule. I've encountered on the web a few people who have been extremely nasty. They didn't want an opinion, or even objectively accurate information.

Such people cannot distinguish between constructive criticism (which they asked for) and being attacked. They are unable to brook views with which they don't agree no matter how civilly stated.

  19. What a fun time. So great to chat with you. I am on the look out for a dressform on craigslist now.
And I agree. Nicest bunch of people ever.

  20. I've met a mean sewer. Actually, she was a quilter. She was not very nice to apparel sewers in her store.

  21. i think it is because we are all coming from a place where we already know how much we have in common - so it makes it easier to respect the many things we also do not share, and be welcoming without having to feel different or defensive or like the odd person out.

and i am so glad to have spent time with you this weekend! you always add so much to a gathering, we must drag you out more often.

  22. this weekend was so fun, and i had a blast chatting about your FIT class, sewing machines, your amazing shirt, and everything else! i agree with dev, we need to see you more often!

  23. Hi Peter, it was a pleasure meeting you this weekend. I only wish I got to really chat with you.

Can't say that I have met any sewist that were complete *itches, but I have come across some that I am sure I don't want to spend time with.

  24. Fun day, and great seeing you again! It is amazing how consistently nice everyone is at these things. Maybe it's all the endorphins we're releasing as we sew all day long - walking back and forth from the ironing board to the sewing machine counts as exercise, right?

  25. It was great seeing you over the weekend! Bummer that you couldn't stay for the whole meet-up, but I'll take what little snippets of Peter that I can :)
