Friday Crossword Puzzle Apparel-PALOOZA!

Little did Miss Verna Lee Fisher suspect, when she posed in her clever crossword puzzle swimsuit and swimcap back in 1933, that she'd be part of a trend that would continue to....this very weekend!

I thought I'd come up with something original when I decided to make Michael a crossword puzzle shirt from a quilting cotton print, but boy was I wrong!

Behold a brief but comprehensive array of crossword apparel, from sneakers to headgear and everything in between.  And speaking of brief, yes, that's a crossword puzzle thong down below!

Personally, I think Michael's shirt is going to top all of these and I hope when you see it you'll agree.  I am somewhat partial to the high-tops and the stockings, however.

Readers, would you purchase/make/wear any of these?  (Have you already?)

Hope you're not feeling overwhelmed with crossword puzzle prints just yet -- the big reveal is coming soon.

Nighty-night, everybody!

  1. Michael simply must find the crossword high-top tennies to go with his new shirt. What a fun fabric!

  2. A dear friend made a couple of those crossword dresses to wear to the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, held every spring. You might enjoy her blog, www.dressaday.com!

  7. I second the motion (or 4th or 5th it or whatever) for the high top sneakers. And in general I think the over-scaled versions of the pattern (like the t-shirt under the endearingly dorky but a little too look-at-me hat) are more successful, or at least easier on the eyes.

  8. Love the sneakers and the bow tie. Can't wait to see the completed shirt!

  9. Okay, the baby onesie maybe, and Micheal's shirt will be fun because, basically, how often do the majority of guys get to wear anything fun? But as a woman over 50, you have to go unique and classy or full-on eccentric (or dowdy/preppy--don't get me started) and for now I'm shooting for classy.

  10. I like the fact that some are "filled in", although I don't always relate to what they say...

  11. I am now searching Ravelry for a pattern for that hat!

  12. All I was able think about is Verna Lee's very tanned skin, and probably not from a bottle either! Hoping she didn't end up with skin cancer. I don't think they realized back then that the sun is not your friend. I'm waiting for the shirt reveal. The other examples won't be any better than what you making.

  13. Et tu Barbie? As seen on a bumper sticker many moons ago, "that b*%#h truly does have everything!". Cute post today, Norma

  15. Yes, I'm recognising wonderful lexicographer Erin McKean's handiwork here from her Dress A Day blog. It's a little distressing that you don't give photo credits, Peter. Hope you'll consider doing something about that in future as folk could get tetchy about their intellectual property. Thanks.
