Cathy's Full 1940's Silk Dress Photoshoot!

Readers, I am delighted to share Cathy's silk dress photo shoot with you today -- in its entirety!

What fun we had galavanting around New York City, where my cousin received countless compliments on her smart frock as well as on her dewy complexion.  The upside of high humidity is that it brings color to the cheeks.

Cathy loved the soft lines and cool feel of this silk charmeuse dress and found the tulip sleeve detail to be especially flattering to her upper arms.   She seems determined to put polyester behind her; hopefully she'll remain open-minded.

Without further delay, our photo shoot.  As always, to see these photos full-size, please click any image and, in Picasa, choose the album name, and then, in the upper left hand corner, "Slideshow."  (Those with mobile devices can click here.)

Hope you enjoy it and have a great day, everybody!

  1. Cathy is looking marvellous! You've done a wonderful job with the silk dress; so refined and stylish. And those are VERY high heels.

  2. WOW!! Cathy looks great! I'm amazed that you have come up with an "up-side" to high humidity...I haven't discovered one yet. Perhaps the next time I'm out on a humid day I should pay attention to the color in my cheeks rather than the sweat on my upper lip and my rapidly melting makeup. I'm still searching for that perfect primer...

Anyway, sorry... off topic. I love, love, love the pics of Cathy smiling, but I have to say that the "sad face" pics nearly made me cry. I seriously wanted to walk over to that park bench and give her a hug and a hankie!

AMAZING WORK on that dress... the hat, the hat BOX (lovely accessory!), and the whole look in general...Cathy "makes it work" and "works it" and the same time! I can't imagine the amount of time and energy it took to put this whole ensemble together so perfectly!

Question: do black fishnet stockings belong with this outfit or would that be the wrong decade? For some reason I feel like I should be seeing hosiery in here somewhere. I'm rather fashion illiterate, though, so I'm probably totally wrong on that one...

WAY TO GO!!! *clapping hands enthusiastically*

    1. I'd skip the fishnets -- others may feel differently. Cathy went bare-legged due to the temperature but I'd go with nude hose or sheer black.

    2. Isn't this the era for a seam up the back?

  3. I wish i had an identical twin cousin like you Peter - Cathy is so very spoiled by you.

  4. Lovely dress (ooh the sleeves!). But Joan Crawford? I hope you 're not hinting that our girl might turn into mommy dearest for poor Simplicity. (On the other hand, I completely agree if Cathy also loathes those nasty wire clothes hangers. This dress certainly deserves a nice padded hanger made out of left-over fabric).

  5. All of the extra work to get the seams right and the fabric not to stretch was so worth it!

  6. Lovely, as always.

  7. Just lovely. I wish humidity would have the same affect on me! The dress also shows off those nice baby-lifting muscles Cathy has developed! Or was it the donut-lifting that did it?
    Beautiful work and a morning's amusement.....nothing better.

  14. This dress is absolutely fabulous! Love the colors, and the hat tops off the look beautifully (don’t think I didn’t notice those matching accessories!). For once, I agree with Cathy – going back to poly will be extremely trying after have an opportunity to wear silk. Although, as I recall, she has plenty of lovely cotton frocks, so she really has nothing to complain about!

By the way . . .I believe Mrs. Danvers may have met her match! And I cannot wait to hear more about that!

  15. Peter, I am so impressed with your sewing. Esp. with the difficult fabric you used.

Also loved the scary little dead things Cathy is wearing.

  16. Great job, Peter. Cathy looks fabulous - and a little bit Wallis Simpson I think.

    Spud.

  19. I've wanted to comment since you put your post up, but I've been speechless. I know you're incredibly good at sewing but this silk dress seems to have taken it even further, don't you think - and it's your first silk dress! That silk organza backstay, genius!
If Cathy persists in not wanting polyester, I volunteer modelling anything you make - I'll bring donuts!

  22. First have to say, Cathy looked lovely :) -- I also tell you that I read your blog through Feedly (a Google Reader replacement) -- and I couldn't have gotten to your pics if it wasn't for the mobile link you gave, because the other pic gave me a Pinterest post link --- so Thanks for the added link --- keep up the lovely work for you cousin, it is so nice of you

  23. Cathy dressed so elegantly but the setting of everyone else looking like slobs and Samsung Galaxy advertisement... an odd combination as if someone photoshopped a glamour girl from decades past into the modern world.

  24. What a sexay dress! The commenter who mentioned Wallis is right I think.
