Peter Models the 1970's Groovy Sheet Suit!
Friends, the suit is finished. OK, it still needs a few buttons here and there, but otherwise I am ready to move on.
I won't lie: this vintage 70's cotton-poly Springmaid sheet is a bit much as a suit, even for this dyed-in-the-bedclothes New Yorker.
I do love the jacket by itself, however. Thanks to interfacing and lining, the jacket has a pretty substantial feel for something that was slept on and Lord knows what else.
I'm wearing the jacket over the short-sleeve white shirt I made a few months ago, Vogue 8889.
You can see our entire photo shoot here.
A big thank you to Michael for allowing me to boss him around this morning. We really need another staff person for these shoots, if only to keep my make up dewy.
In closing, readers, do you think I should --
1) Wear these flowered garments as separates but never together.
2) Wear the whole suit, but hold out for a glamorous summer party -- or MPB Day!
3) Avoid used bedding from this day forward.
Have a great day, everybody, and to those out hunting eggs -- Happy Easter!
I think it looks great! I do like it better with the dark pants. You look great either way. I say go ahead and use sheets. It's a great way to recycle and reuse.
ReplyDeleteWow this is FABULOUS!! You look FAB
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter. Now I know what the Easter Bunny looks like. I do like the photo shoot, and I'd vote for 2. That would be worth the price of a plane ticket for MPB day!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks AMAZING together!!! You styled it perfectly and you're looking very model-y in these shots! Giving Cathy a run for her money ;o)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great with jeans, too. But I don't think you should shy away from wearing the pieces together. This is New York, after all!Lol
Brilliant! Loving the jacket for ever day as a separate .. but come on .. you have to wear it all together for at least one summer party!!!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the jacket over the white tee or white shirt with slacks or jeans. Buti really don't like the two pieces together. You did an amazing job with the jacket!
ReplyDeletePeter, this suit makes me ridiculously happy. I don't know of anyone else that pull it off.
ReplyDeleteLooking good Mr Lappin.
ReplyDeleteI vote you wear them as separates and as a suit for high and holy days.
Hugs
G
You can absolutely wear the two together as a suit! - if you're playing the Easter bunny at a kids' party - once a year. My recent psychedelic crossword pj's aside, I'm not really a fan of over the top matchy matchy, I must admit....
ReplyDeleteHowever, the jacket with the white shirt & jeans? FABulous!
While it's good to acknowledge our roots, I do think it's time for you to move past bedsheets and embrace your inner (and outer) fine quality fabric wearing self more often. :)
Awesome both ways, but quite an eye workout together! Paired with solids, you have the zany impact, but the eye can still focus. Worn together, it's nice but I stop seeing you and only see the suit.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Love it as a jacket but I think it is a little too much a sensory overload together. Unless you have the right occasion though...
ReplyDeleteYup, definitely should be worn as separates. Together it looks like dapper pajamas. (WOMEN'S pajamas, at that.); much too BUSY. But separately, I could see the jacket w. solid-colour pants/pants w. solid colour top being a BIG HIT if you should ever visit Key West, and, of course, summer in NY, maybe at the local Pride celebration this year?
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter Peter! I like option 1 and 2 :) The whole outfit looks great!
ReplyDeleteKind of love the psychedelic overload. Who knew such a floral print could be so flattering?!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Just needs one more thing: matching tie made from the bedsheet scraps!
ReplyDeleteIt's completely fabulous. :-) I'm with everyone else though, maybe wear them seperately except when you're feeling in a particularly psychedelic mood. A little sensory overload is good for you now and then. Love it!
ReplyDeleteamazing workmanship, even though you need headache pills after looking at it for a while. I think perhaps just wearing the pieces sep would be best.
ReplyDeleteWear pants and jacket together or separately.
ReplyDeleteThey look like a whole lotta fun either way. You need an Easter Parade to march in!
I really like the suit paired with the grey T-shirt and grey shoes. I'm always amazed what you're able to do with bedsheets.
It looks great! I like it together or seperately. Perfect Easter outfit. The slim pants are perfect.
ReplyDeleteFABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteWear them any way you feel happy in. The line of each garment is so good and the details so nice that spectators who sew will be made happy whether they like the fabric or not, and spectators who don't sew will be cheered up by the bright fabric. Whatever way, everyone wins. Can't wait for the suit in the good fabric which I would guess might appear as an ensemble in public more often than this sheet set. Is there a scrap of sheeting left to make a breastpocket handkerchief for the more sober suit? To give a secret signal that this tailored carapace a bright floral heart is beating?
ReplyDelete3) Avoid using bed linen from this day forward.
ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to imagine how you've managed this, but you look kind of badass in some of these photos.
ReplyDeleteExactly what I was thinking! Looking badass in a psychedelic bed sheet suit is beyond amazing.
DeleteSo clever! The jacket on it's own it pops! Save the suit for really special occasions such as when you moonlight as a news reader. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLove the jacket with the white shirt and dark pants. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about what happened on those sheets. They were on my sister's and my bunk beds in 1965 and we didn't get up to much. I like the suit. I bet you were the hit of the Easter parade.
ReplyDeleteI dare you to wear the suit in the Hamptons!
ReplyDeleteLike the suit, but love the jacket by itself! Please keep using groovy vintage bedding material - so fun, unique and such an inspiration!!! I have loved following this fun sewing project.
ReplyDeleteWow! Only you can pull off this look so effortlessly. The jacket is great. Love the fit. I say, go out and wear the hell out of it.
ReplyDeleteTWO!!! Wear as separates if you like but it's like the male embodiment of every Lilly Pulitzer dress and every awesome summer party rolled into one! COOL!
ReplyDeleteNo to the suit, but yes to the jacket. Hard to believe that your jacket started out as a muslin. The fit is great!
ReplyDeleteYou forgot 4) Make a matching vest.
ReplyDeleteGo big or go home!
I'm all out of sheet!
DeleteAWESOME!!!!! Lord, I totally love this suit!! The jacket looks and fits fantastically, you did a super job. I prefer it worn as separates, BUT I'd say wear as a suit for fun/frivolous party times!
ReplyDeleteWatch out Cathy!!
I love this as a suit for special occasions! It is fine as separates as well but only half the fun!
ReplyDeleteOK, I kind of love it - even worn together, but I certainly think you could as easily wear this as separates. I think the fit is terrific, Peter. It's because it fits so nicely that it's so wearable, despite its - um - sparkle factor :-) The jacket with jeans would have a NYC hipster meets Miami Vice vibe - totally awesome combo, IMO. And I say, keep using the sheets. You do love them!
ReplyDeleteI agree about the fit, but I find the shoes are throwing it off somehow to me.... with the tapered ankle, something just isn't right with the big shoes.
Deletewhilst the suit looks fabulous as separates, i can't help but think how freaking awesome you look wearing it as an ensemble.
ReplyDeleteIt's a winner outfit Peter; I LOVE it.
The suit is too much--and just right! Elle
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the jacket on its own. The suit would be great fun for a party and for making new friends in the street!
ReplyDeleteLove love the suit. Be tempted to stick to number one.....fabulous jacket on it's own and how about the pants with a plain white shirt and button vest?
ReplyDeleteHi Peter! I think the jacket turned out great! I´d rather wear it as a suit to make a real statement. I especially like the white shirt / sunglass combination, you look like a model in an Italian designer photo shoot:-)
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of you standing in front of the graffiti wall!! I definitely think you should wear this for MPB day (if its not too hot!) I think they work well as separates too!! Well done and special compliments to the photographer as well!!
ReplyDeleteHOT!
ReplyDeleteCompletely fabulous as a suit! Come to London in it; we'll LOVE you!
ReplyDeleteI would defo keep using sheets etc and the jacket is amazing. The ensemble looks great in the 'walking' shot. Though I think separately, the jacket has the most potential for wearability.
ReplyDeleteOver on TLo there was a photo of Ryan Gosling in a velvet suit and it was even too much of a good thing on him. Separate.
ReplyDeleteThere is something strangely sexy about this bed sheet suit.
ReplyDeletehow did you line the jacket - did you bag it?
ReplyDeletemici
it's a bit over the top, but you sure get away with it! Really cool, would make my day to see someone walking on the street in something like this.
ReplyDeleteit so cool!!
ReplyDeleteWear the whole ensemble together, but with a dark grey, navy or forest green shirt. Sunglasses for mystery. Some sort of chic 'man bag" and really nice shoes. My vote is actually a motorcycle boot or cowboy boot. Walk with purpose everywhere you go in it, and no smiling. Then, you've got it. Forget that it was ever a sheet. Now, that's irrelevant. It is as cool as you make it, now.
ReplyDeleteYou look like a Tom Ford model in some of those pictures.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Cathy isn't the only runway diva in the clan?
you look so handsome!! Love the grey(?) shoes with it. Prob best as separates---altho for any over-the-top occasion, I say go for the whole ensemble!
ReplyDeleteI never would have looked at that fabric and thought suit but you actually manage to pull it off and with that white shirt you look nice and suave. You really wear that jacket. That being said, it's a special occasion if you want to wear the pants and jacket together...
ReplyDeleteYou look so fab. You are working that jacket. Fit of everything is spot on.
ReplyDeleteYou fearless design sense is inspirational.
I"m going to go with 1 and 3. I like either piece, not both together. And your skills are so far beyond using bedsheets as anything but bedsheets. Yes, you can make bedsheets look wonderful, but why?
ReplyDeleteOriginally this was intended as a muslin for my gray cotton-mohair suit, but I got carried away. The gray suit is up next!
DeleteYou look totally badass...for a man in a sheet! I think you could rock this with the right attitude!
ReplyDeleteLove your work. Peggy
You can carry off anything.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I thought it was April's Fool ...
ReplyDeletehOLY sHeEt! You are fabulous in that suit. Wear as suit or as separates! You look too, too amazing. And, of course you should keep using sheets as muslins. How could you not after this tour de force?
ReplyDeleteI vote for Mimi Jackson's comment! Very Quentin-Tarantino-movie-esque...
ReplyDeletewhen i was a kid we made little nosegays of flowers and delivered them on May Day, that was before the festivities in Moscow and Beijing were widely broadcast, of course. i think you should wear this suit on 1 May, for sure.
ReplyDeletei'm pretty sure that this pattern is a Waverly home dec pattern which was also available in home dec fabric because i'm also pretty sure that my mom had drapes, princess valence, and bedspread made out of it. if you fell on her bed in that suit, you'd disappear!
love love love it with the van's
LOVE! Seriously. The entire suit. Plus the white shirt, vans, raybans and the attitude. Yep. Keep using the bedsheets!
ReplyDeleteAnd you know its a winner when my four-year-old son has asked for a replica for himself!
Cindi
I think you need to wear this suit to a CHURCH on Easter Sunday. Nevermind if you're not Christian or don't celebrate -- this is an Easter suit if ever I saw one. I would never in a millian years have thought to combine that floral bed sheet with a men's suit pattern. You must have pulled off some seriously sophisticated tailoring to get a bed sheet to behave as a suit fabric!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE YOUR SUIT! You live in NYC, Peter, so I say anything goes and you should wear it however you fancy. Now, if you lived in Dubuque, IA, I would say you might get some strange looks while wearing the ensemble and you might be better served to wear as separates. Also, and I don't know if you were aware of this, but your bedsheet is right on-trend with Pantone's spring color palette. Unless my monitor lies, I saw Dusk Blue, Tender Shoots Green, African violet, and (maybe) Linen. Love the jacket with the jeans and love the suit with the Vans. I actually think the suit would look better with a darker shirt, maybe charcoal or navy, but as long as you commit to it, wear it however and whenever you like!
ReplyDeleteWear them separately all summer for sure. Hey, you live in Chelsea no? So wear them together to art openings.
ReplyDeleteBravo! You have reached the pinnacle of sheet to clothes. It's time to move on.
ReplyDeleteWear them together once a year and make it count.
Wear the pieces separately as much as you want, they are FABULOUS! Loving the dark pants and white shirt combo.
This look is killer on you. Wear as separates all the time and together for dress up!
ReplyDeleteThat jacket is SMASHING!!! The ONLY reason I recommend wearing them as separates is because that jacket deserves to get every bit of attention it's due when you wear it! The whole outfit doesn't offend my eye in any way...I just think the pants rob the jacket of that WOWZA quality by drawing attention away from it when they are worn together.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, KEEP USING SHEETS!! Thanks to you, I am now completely unable to overlook the "linen" department in the thrift shop; when I look at the racks of old sheets, I see a treasure trove just begging to be plundered!
Peter, you must be the only person I know who could pull this off. I love the picture of the full suit with t-shirt and dark glasses! I say - wear them separately and no more bedsheets.
ReplyDelete2!! The floral fabric is kind of a trademark of this blog :) Also, 1 because as the above commenter points out, wear that jacket as much as you can, it's awesome!
ReplyDeleteLooooooooooooove this! I like them together and separate. What a fun set! I can see the jacket looking way cute with white shorts... very Hamptons chic!
ReplyDeleteWow. Im jealous. I'd wear that jacket, NOW. Wish I lived closer, I'd like to come over for a "sew date." I'm handy with a seam ripper and a camera too.
ReplyDeleteBecause I'm looking for spring stuff. Look what I tried on today

Didn't buy but I thought of you.
Oh, those pants! Not sure I love the trim down the sides, however.
DeleteCool store, btw.
It's a great suit; wear it as separates or wear them together. It's NYC after all where men can get away with wearing whatever they want.
ReplyDeleteBut, it puzzles me as to why you would spend all this time making a gorgeous suit out of not very fabulous fabric, quality wise.
Nancy, this was originally meant to be muslin for my upcoming gray suit project, then I decided I'd use it to practice my welt pockets. Then I just decided to finish it. I took quite a few shortcuts.
DeleteI'm putting my vote confidently down for 'number 2.' And if I'm ever in NY I'd be happy to help out on your fashion shoots, especially if there's a floral sheet suit involved!
ReplyDeleteLove the workmanship. I think you should wear the suit anyway you want. If I was wearing it, I would definitely break it up, or wear it separately. Because they are made so well I think you can get away with the flower power look. They are not sloppy, but fit your perfectly and it doesn't look like someone ran them up on the machine, they are fitted and perfectly tailored.
ReplyDeleteThose shoulders are perfect! Wear it proudly!
ReplyDeleteCrash the next Project Runway shoot in the full suit. I know you can do it.
ReplyDeleteWear it with the lavendar shirt you made with the cuffs that match the suit. A three piece bed linen suit.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog today. I searched for "Shirt vintage sheet" and came across a March,2010 photo you posted of yourself in a men's shirt in a similar floral pattern .
ReplyDeleteI love (LOVE) this suit, and it really is not all that "out there", when I see some of the 70s patterns you worked with (the one shirt pattern shows pants in a similar pattern to this shirt).
I think Lily Pulitzer would be way jealous!!
BTW, can't want till after Memorial Day to see you wear it with some white dress shoes. (w. buckles - like the salesman on WKRP)
ReplyDeleteyou should totally wear it as a suit! i love it, the fit is fantastic, colors and print are fabulous (and i wasn't totally convinced when i first saw the print and what you plan to do with it, but now that i see it finished, all i can say is - hell yeah! i want that!)
ReplyDeleteThe fit on that jacket is divine! I completely love it!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say that the jacket with a solid pair of trousers is my favorite look. However, you can absolutely rock the floral suit if you so choose! And I bet those pants would look pretty awesome with a simple t-shirt or button down.
Fabulous job, Peter!
You look wonderful! Honestly: a younger man could not carry that off.
ReplyDeleteYou're in NYC. Wear it whenever and however you want. Nobody will notice, anyway, and you look gorgeous! It's really just so lovely. I am still coveting that jacket for myself. : )
ReplyDeleteI love it as a set! It's amazing and unique!
ReplyDeleteQuite possibly the BEST. SUIT. EVER! :)
ReplyDeleteWear both continuously for all occasions and carry big stick to beat off vintage sheet fanatics who may attempt to cut charm squares from your raiment when your back is turned.
ReplyDeleteOMG ! I definitly like your suit ! I want the same ! Can you tell me , please which pattern did you use ? Thank you !
ReplyDelete
