Color Block Shirt: New Slim Fit!
Was that a collective groan I just heard? I know you're getting tired of looking at this shirt, friends, but think how I must feel: I had to sew the darn thing.
I made some tweaks today, however, and I wanted to share them with you. First, I added vintage white plastic buttons to the front placket and cuff. I think they look sporty. The bottom one is just for show since the placket doesn't actually open down that far; two buttons looked like too few. The cuffs also have white buttons, but smaller.
Then there was the question of fit. Looking at those photos from yesterday's post, I realized that the fit was still a bit caftan-like. I decided to take in the sides about one inch on either side. The result is a much slimmer fit.

After:
Rather than just hem the bottom, I added bias tape made with what was left of my fashion fabric. Since I'll likely be wearing this casual shirt out (of my pants) most of time, I wanted a nicer finish.
This really is it, friends. Of course, you might see me in my shirt tomorrow if I post pictures of this evening's Pattern Review party at Elliott Berman. Or perhaps I'll spare you.
In either case, happy Wednesday, everybody!
Terrific improvement on the fit, Peter.
ReplyDeleteGood choice on the slimmer fit. This shirt has turned out very nice.
ReplyDeleteI think the shirt is fabulous. I would love it. I've been following you for about six months now. Enjoy you a great deal. One question. Where do you find the time to do so much sewing. I love to sew but never seem to be able to find a lot of time. A shirt like that would take me weeks to complete. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! I love it! Fantastic detailing.
ReplyDeleteNice job Peter. Congratulations

Though I didn't comment, I think the shirt looks much better than before. White buttons were the way to go.
ReplyDeleteYour shirt looks great!!! Fabulous job!!
ReplyDeleteI thought it looked good before but I must say that the slimmer fit was definitely the way to go. Good call.
ReplyDeleteThe slimmer fit was definitely the way to go. It looks great on you. Good job.
ReplyDeleteThe bias-finished hem is a nice touch. The tapered fit is definitely an improvement. And I retract my previous remarks several posts ago about pattern-combining. You pulled this off. Bravo.
ReplyDeleteWish I could be at the PR event rather than here under a foot of snow in Minneapolis.
Your shirt looks great. I have to admit when I read an earlier post with sketches shown, I just did not think this was going to look good. Boy, was I wrong!!! I like this shirt very much and it is a great fit.
ReplyDeleteMuy Buen!!
ReplyDeletePeter, I love it! You really did a great job on the color blocking (so inventive) and the slim fit.
ReplyDeleteNice modifications! The bias tape it a really nice touch...and the fit looks better on you now. I hope you DO post a pic from tonight's event!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely demand that you take and post pictures here tomorrow!! The shirt is even more striking with the streamlining....great job Peter considering the problems you had!
ReplyDeleteThis shirt is my fav of everything you've made! Such clever use of the prints. And nicely made.
ReplyDeleteYour shirt looked even better in person. It was awesome to meet you last night. Can't wait to see what project is next.
ReplyDeleteGreat Job,Peter! The tweaks were all good the decisions. The addition of the 3rd button on the placket was a smart move. You've inspired me to attempt some color-blocking of my own.
ReplyDeleteMuch nicer fit, Peter! Before, the shirt was wearing you. Now you are wearing--and rocking--the shirt!

The slimmer fit looks definitely better. I would have used real mother-of-pearl buttons myself, but that's just me. And no, why shouldn't you tweak? That's the point of making one's clothes: to have them the way YOU want them! And if a bit of tweakage is necessary to get them that way, then so be it!
