Fabulous, Feathery, Flea Market Finds!

OK, so I made an impulse purchase.  Like you've never done that?

Maybe it's the heat (blistering), maybe the humidity (wilting), or maybe I just like sky blue feathers (fun!).  This feathered stretch cap -- vintage 60's I believe and made in the former Yugoslavia -- is perfect for those mornings when you need to run to the Piggly Wiggly in your curlers.  Or if you're just having a bad hair day.

It stretches!

I could have sworn I've seen a hat like this on the cover of a Sixties Vogue, or maybe it was a Phyllis Diller album.  Anyway, it's in fabulous condition and the perfect shade for a summer (me).  Just $10.

Sticking to my $20 flea-market-fun limit, I got lots more stuff.  Uncut vintage patterns @ $1 each!  (Some of these will be giveaways for sure.)

Can't have too many pearls -- or rhinestones!

Friends, it's so very hot here or did I say that already?  The dogs are bushed and it isn't even lunchtime.  Michael, the same.

Readers, I hope you're staying cool this weekend.  Or if you live on the other side of the planet, you're keeping warm.  I want you to be comfortable.

Who can tell me more about feather stretch caps?  Did you ever own one or know someone who did?  (Just found an eBay seller offering something similar here.)

Have a great day, everybody!

UPDATE: Look!

  1. It is certainly worth your $10 to me to see photos of you in that hat - very cute. Is it perfect for a fashion shoot with Cathy sometime? She is unique, she could maybe pull it off?

Also, love the patterns, some of them are cute.

    Peter, Peter, Peter....

I love you and your blog to bits.... But that hat makes you look a bit like a Muppet. o_o

  3. I agree with Beth, that is a great hat and hope to see it soon on a Cathy shoot. I have the whole thing pictured in my head right now.

  4. you actually got me to take a picture of myself wearing one of my grandmother's old feather hats and posting it here: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Ploesj/Fotoop30-06-2012om1824.jpg

it sheds like crazy now, but i remember her wearing this sometimes, when i was very young. its later life involved being part of several clown costumes.

    1. Oh, I love yours -- such a pretty color. That looks like marabou.

  5. As far as I can tell, you are the first person I've ever known with a feather cap.

  6. the color is slightly less bright in real life, but it's gorgeous indeed. too bad it's slightly too tight for my gigantic head now.

  7. There are swimsuits out there that were never intended for actual swimming. The feathered hat looks a bit like a swim cap that was never intended for swimming.

  8. When I saw you in this hat I wanted to see you and your bird singing Doris Day....I could not find it on youtube and now I have tears...boo hoo. I love/hate this crazy blue hat.

  9. I think the blue feathers might look better with a clean shaven face. Other than that, I love it.

  10. I bought one for 99p on eBay, rolled it up, pinned it to my head at a jaunty angle and wore it to a wedding, and then some time later added it to our own wedding dress-up box. We have self-portraits of about half our wedding guests wearing it.

I must say, it suits you beautifully.

  11. I think your feather hat would look faboo with a vintage-styled swimsuit, pearls, high heels and a dacquiri. Poolside glamor!

  12. I sure hope that black Givenchy dress with the animal print belt is my size! Looking forward to the give-away!

  13. I'll second Melody, that Givency Vogue pattern 2086 is stunning. Thank you for suggesting a give-away with your lovely patterns. The coat pattern is to die for too. Love the cap also. I could see Cathy and Jean Paul Gaultier fighting over that find.

  14. At one time I collected vintage hats. I had several with feathers that were very chic. However, the one you have I believe might be part of a pool side ensemble (or however you spell it). I recall, vaguely my relatives wearing swim suits that they didn't swim in and similar hats. They also had matching robes. I am not sure why they didn't swim but I guess if you were with guests and you chose not to swim then you would at least look stylish not swimming and sipping on your cocktail

  15. Oh no, they skinned big bird! (if that doesn't make sense to you, you should know that in the Dutch version of Sesame Street, big bird. has always been blue. This exact shade of blue)

Oh, and those vintage patterns look.

  16. It's like a cross between Big Bird & the Cookie Monster! I recall wearing one of these at someones house playing dress up in the 70's (it was cream tho')

  17. I love the contrast of the fluffy feathers with the prickly stubble!

  18. OOh, I feel like you belong in the synchronized swimming number in an old musical. LOL

  19. Love it! Great way to keep the sun off your head in the northern hemisphere. It could be a great way to keep your head warm and comfortable here in freezing Melbourne.

  20. Cathy is going to lose her mind when she sees that fantastic feathered topper! It's utterly sensational! Definitely the best purchase of the day.

I sure hope you all have air conditioning there....it was in the 90'sF today!

  21. Great hat, Peter. Poolside it is....Those Vogues (un-cut) are to-die-for. I have been looking for that "peasanty" St. Laurent one (hint, hint). Cathie, in Quebec And very hot here too. Going to a pool party/BBQ tomorrow. I could borrow the hat (LOL).

  22. Maybe a photoshoot starring your feather topper and a new pouffy swimsuit that you were contemplating some weeks ago?

  23. Admirable panache!

    "Ralliez-vous à mon panache bleu!"

  24. OMG! Jopsy figured it out. Big Bird got it ON with Cookie Monster. At least it makes a fab hat. I LOVE that you modeled it. A photo of it on the table would not have done it justice...plus you just make it look so fun.

  25. Oh how I adore it,
on a personal note I would be unable to help my self from customizing it just a smidgen more, perhaps the addition of a diamante butterfly?possibly appliquéd on to the side of that delicious confection of feathers.
For me it would need something to break the block of colour slightly, so those that see it are forced to consider it in more depth, and not just dismiss it as a pile of blue feathers.
I am sure you will do wonders with it.

  26. You should model your feather hat with your Jouy-ful pants!

That St. Laurent pattern is to DIE for! > hand shoots up and waves frantically< I am officially putting in my bid for it if it's being made available for copying at any point! St. Laurent's "Russian period" has influenced my wardrobe choices all my life..., Peter, I have by way of a bribe, my own vintage St. Laurent pattern of a "Russian" suit from the same period (I'll try and get a photo of it: skirt, jacket, and blouse in a size 12 or thereabouts) I would in fact be happy to make a copy of MY pattern for you if you were to allow me to copy YOUR pattern >throws herself to her knees with hands clasped prayerfully< I could even reimburse you the postage! We have some American money around here somewhere!

  27. At first glance, as everyone seems to have noted, the feather cap resembles one of those flowery swim caps of yore. But I don't see it with a swimsuit though -- it needs a flamboyant hostess dress and a long cigarette holder. It is very Phyllis Diller -- so fun. Hope it inspires something wonderful . . .

  28. I yet can see Cathy modeling this hat with a classy and sophisticated dress.

    Great shopping Peter!

Next weekend we have a big annual flea-market here in my borrow in Germany. I hope I will have great finds like you had!

    XO

  29. Peter,

    Sometimes you frighten me;
    I have one in yellow.

That Vogue coat pattern is amazing.

  30. Awesome hat, it is crying out for a pool cover up and jeweled sandals, or maybe a Liz Taylor caftan

  31. Vogue Originals for $1?! Also, I blogged about my love for that Vogue Givenchy a while back (the way they styled those 60's patterns with the gloves and cloche hats makes me WEAK in the knees) so hopefully that will be up for giveaway (she says while clutching the hem of her housecoat in anticipation).

  32. So in love with the patterns you found. I have to start leaving the baby with hubby and checking out flea markets too! Am trying to work out what is happening with the red vogue coat/dress there...

I think the feather cap is more of a "winter" blue. At least it looks tidy-bowl blue on my screen. But it's fun! (and muppetesque) and needs some colorful rhinestones & leopard print (and satin?) to go with.
