Cinderella at the Ball

Friends, if you're the type of person who dreams of being told you look beautiful -- by none other than supermodel Heidi Klum*  (I kid you not) -- then this was the event for you!

What can I say about last night you won't read in headlines all over the world?  The show, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, is a smash -- a fabulous, tuneful spectacle that will undoubtedly run on Broadway for years.  We loved it.

Brian Thomson, our host, who had invited us not only to the show, but also to the opening night party (the backstory here), couldn't have been more warm and welcoming.  I know Brian and I are going to be the best of best friends and please don't think I'm saying this just because he's a Tony award-winning scenic designer with his own Wikipedia page.  You know I don't care about outward achievement but only the quality of one's soul.

Of course, Cathy's the type who would get down on her knees for the opportunity to have another experience like last night's -- and I know Brian won't misunderstand what I mean by that.

Celebrities, you ask?  How's Bette Midler, Kathleen Turner, Joan RiversRenee Zellweger (and the aforementioned Ms. Klum*) and countless name-above-the-title types from Australia I wouldn't know from Adam.

* CORRECTION: It wasn't Heidi Klum, it was Christie Brinkley -- whoops!

After the show we came home for a disco nap, let the dogs pee, and then cabbed it over to the opening night party at nearby Pier 60 along the Hudson River.  What fun we had!  Cathy was the only woman there dressed like Princess Margaret and she received countless complements from both men and women.  A vision in faux fox.

Finally, nearing midnight, Cinderella had to hightail it home and soak her feet.

Today we're drinking lots of coffee and hoping for a call from one of the countless people in whose faces we pushed ourselves last night.  You don't get invited to A-list events every day!

A slideshow of highlights is below and I hope you enjoy watching it.

As always, to see these photos full-size, please click on any image and then, in Picasa, choose "View All" in the upper left hand corner, and "Slideshow."

Have a great day, everybody, and best regards from the Great White Way!

  1. Cathy, Peter, and Michael,
Thanks you for the post and photos. My daughter and I have been eagerly waiting all morning for the review of the evening. Cathy, you looked lovely with your handsome date Michael. Hopefully PQofD will someday soon have a national cast that performs out here in the desert of New Mexico.

  2. I am so jealous that you met Better Midler!!!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH! Cathy and Michael look rather fetching! I would like all of you to know that I am working out how to incorporate the phrase "disco nap" into my life and conversation.

  4. You are glowing in every picture! It looks like you had a great time. Your dress is really pretty. You actually stood out next to the drag-queens who were covered in sequins. Sneaky manuever, to grab the attention by being understated!

  6. What a glamorous evening; I am a bit green with envy right now. But, what a gorgeous couple Cathy and Michael make! I am a sucker for a man in a tuxedo, so Michael made me swoon...Thank you so much for sharing your magical night. The photos are wonderful!

  10. OMG. What a night. (quick, cue the BeeGees)As had been said before, there is no man alive who doesn't look aces in a black properly fitting tux. And Cathy just looked so lovely - seriously. I'm so glad that everyone had such a great time - definitely a night to remember! But if Cathy is going to be going to Broadway openings with Michael in his tux, she needs a gown. Definitely. And something a little perhaps more festive on the hair front. :)

  15. Cathy positively GLOWS! What a magical night.

...side-note, perhaps Cathy should take a few posing pointers from the vintage women's pattern envelopes rather than the men's? My mother always told me that ladies 'keep their legs closed...' But then again, I could never be bothered to ;)

  28. Love the Princess Margaret reference. Did you add a gin to complete the ensemble?Fabulous all round. Isn't it time the anonymous Sydney reader stepped up and took a bow?

  29. Oh what an excitement that must have been! Cathy looked awesome and I am very glad that you didn't find the time to sew the black bodice and that she didn't wear that black belt.
I am joining the group of the jealous-green people!

  30. The smile on my face is so BIG...my cheeks hurt!!! Oh what fun. I love the Princess Margaret comment!! A night to remember for sure.

I just love ALL the pictures, but you and Michael together are some of the best. Michael looked absolutely smashing! as did Cathy, which goes without saying.

Thanks for the look into the glamorous world of Broadway!! It is where you were meant to be even if you did it in a somewhat round-a-bout way!

  31. Cathy is indeed a vision of understated style and glamour.... and it sounds like a magical night!

  32. OMG, what a coincidence. I worked with Brian many times over the years when I was a Production Manager. He's a lovely man.

  35. OMG! It sounds like you had the best evening ever! I am so pleased for Micheal and Cathy, they both looked fabulous. Rubbing elbows with the rich and famous is exactly what Cathy needed after her incarceration. Congrats on a fantastic evening.

Who would have thought hemming a pair of jeans could lead to this?

  36. Cathy is looks radiant and happy, positively glowing!

  37. Cathy, Dahling! It looks like you did not have a 'bumpy night' at all, on the contrary you did nothing but shine! And the picture of you cutting the rug almost made me fall off my chair...Jane Wyman would never have acted with such abandon! (See every film role she ever did) And your escort made Rock Hudson look like a wet rag...

  38. You, Peter, have an astounding amount of courage.

If this smashing success leads to more party invitations (and why wouldn't it?), that Cathy girl is going to need more evening wear.

I'm thinking satin jacquard in her best color. With feather trim.

  39. Some might call it courage; some might call it shameless self-promotion! LOL

  40. Well, if you don't promote yourself, who will? One step closer to world domination, well done! We'll all be able to say we knew you when.

  41. I have to admit I didn't really connect those two things "Peter and Michael got an invitation to the theatre" and "Cathy needs an outfit for the theatre" silly of me. What an awesome night you guys had!!

  42. WOW. Blogging has had such an impact on your life. I am really happy for you - what adventures you have!!

  46. How fabulous for all of you! Okay, how was the show? I saw Terry Treachout's review in the WSJ this morning, and it was a dismaying read. PQotD is one of my favorite movies.

  47. Cathy looked delightful! How lucky for her to have seen and be seen by so many stars! And Bette Midler! Be still my beating heart. I still endeavor to make a polka dot suit like the one she donned in Big Business.
