Dynasty dress update w/ POLL

My Nolan Miller creation is almost done!  Still need to hem, understitch, add closures and shoulder pads, and accessorize (found those shoes at the Salvation Army on Tuesday -- perfect!).
Everything in this dress that could be gathered, is gathered: the shoulders, the sleeves, the bottom bodice edge, the top bodice edge, the skirt, the sleeve caps.  I think that's the secret to Eighties fashion.

How many miles of thread are headed to the landfill as a result of this garment!

With forecasts in the 60s for the next few days -- and Cathy back from Paris tonight -- I'm hopeful we'll be able to do our photo shoot soon.  I sure hope she likes it.

While you're waiting for the real thing, sit back and enjoy this little trip down memory lane as we recall Eighties fashion at its shoulder-padded best:

Have a great Thursday, everybody!

  1. It's beautiful Peter, Cathy will look lovely.

I love the video... "If you sew, you can make them!"

I think you've just found your next contest, make your own dynasty inspired outfit!

  2. Love the video... so informative, and glad I watched (I was thinking it was just going to be a Dynasty clip).

  3. Yes, we can start with Dynasty and then move through all the nighttime soaps.

Gather your sleeve caps while ye may!

  6. What a great dress! I am looking forward to the photo shoot pics. Now, I have a garment construction question that I hope won't seem indelicate to ask, but does sewing for Cathy require some kind of bust adjustment?

  10. Amazing! I love that fit!! But I feel it should be in siren red too, no :-) I guess this is the garden party version. The red one will work at the boite.

  11. Thanks, all.

I think what I love most about this dress is that it is so completely out of fashion it's almost IN fashion! LOL

  12. RuPaul mentioned on a recent episode of "Drag Race" that white pumps are a sign of a true hooker.

  14. Y'know, that doesn't remind me of Dynasty so much as it does Designing Women. Then again, I watched Designing Women, and didn't watch Dynasty! :)

  15. Cathy's new dress is fabulous! The combination of that fabric and that Dynasty style is brilliant and takes the dress right out of the eighties and into absolutely now.

I watched a few seasons of Dynasty last year on dvd and it was entertaining to see what they wore. Mostly fabulous eye candy but the pants, omigosh, the fit of the pants could be pretty atrocious. Joan and Linda both sported wedgies all too often. Let's not talk about the so called plot, that was exhausting.

Love the shoes and I am looking forward to the photo shoot with the perfect hat too.

  16. The dress is fabulous! I love the hat!
I think Cathy will need larger accessories to complete this Dynasty look.

  17. that sheet is looking so good reincarnated as a dress ... and it took me a while to realise but that's you modelling! looking good! but i think the dress looks fab without the shoulder pads

  18. Cathy and I are often confused with each other, Susan. That's the downside to having an identical cousin.

  19. When I first saw the sheet/fabric, I thought "On No! Nothing would look good in that fabric." I was so wrong! It looks great. I can't wait to see Cathy in her new dress.

  20. Oh dear! Peter, Peter you are giving me 80's flashbacks...I WORE that stuff. Voluminous 'gathered everywhere' garden party dresses with nipped in waists. Pastel hip length pink jackets with BIG shoulder pads. big hair, teased and lacquered. (Luckily I had lotsa hair) I loved Linda Evans. I even bought her beauty book...If I still had it I would send it to you. It was a hoot. She said something about her favourite makeup artist who 'made up women for day or evening use'. I kid you not. Unforgetable stuff. Yet in the 80's we had the hide to refer to the 70's as 'the era that style forgot'. In reality every decade has its own style and things that we joyfully remember. Thank you for reminding me.
ps Cathy's dress is going to be a knockout and those shoes are wonderful.

  21. Please don't put Princess Di on the same list as Cathy. Your cousin deserves more respect. Mae
