A little Joan Collins number for cousin Cathy?

Am I ready to tackle faux fur (bottom) or should I go with the vintage Dynasty-era Joan Collins outfit up top?  (These are the kind of things that keep me up at night.)  The Vogue cape pattern arrived today -- basically a big baby blanket, but it's Vogue!

I'm just wondering if January is too late to start sewing more outerwear.  I mean, shouldn't I be working on Cruise wear 2010?  BTW, if you click on a photo, you'll see it full-size.

  1. Hi Peter,
I bought the Necchi. It came in a 60 or 70's era cabinet (think the brady bunch) and is kind of peachish and white. It came with a manual, but nothing else. I guess I'll be investing in feet and cams. Anyway thanks for the advice and neat picture show of your Necchi.
You are my hero and I love reading your blog.

  4. HI Peter, I'm glad to see you've got a blog now. I also found my way here via the selfish seamstress, but I would have found you via PR anyway.
BTW both you and SS are 'sew' darn talented this old sew-er delights in seeing what you both come up with.

  5. Indeed, another who wandered over from selfish seamstress -- although I'd admired the bed sheet button-down since it debut on pattern review. Loving all of the wandering and musing through NYC -- where I too learned to sew (not many investment bankers had to leave their evening sessions early to go to Pfaff class.) But alas, now sewing (not enough) outside of Philly -- where there is far too much upholstery and very little garment fabric - to say nothing of sequins and feathers. Good luck, I look forward to following the blog.

  7. I saw that you had won a PR contest then came over via Selfish Seamstress too. Cathy looks a bit like my mum in her early '60s heyday. Love you both despite my barely-concealable envy at your sewing skills, keep blogging!

  8. You can totally handle the fake fur- you just have to be sure to shave down the seam allowances, cut only through the backing, and get the pile running in the correct direction. I did a fur how-to sometime back that might be useful:

I look forward to seeing it!

  9. Clare, do you mean to say I look like your 60-year-old mother! (LOL) Actually, Kenneth King himself said I looked like Julie Andrews. Unfortunately he didn't say what PERIOD Julie Andrews. Heck she still looks good and all, but my choice would be somewhere between "Lonely Goatherd" and the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen reprise."

I should have started a blog months ago; it's fun!

  10. ha! My mother in the 1960s when she was 25 and a proper head-turner (by all accounts!) Maybe it's The Hairdo and The Cheekbones. I'm a very lazy blogger but come and visit anyway. I'll be posting on my first forays into corsetry in the coming days (like I said, lazy!).
